Bob Irwin said he left Australia Zoo because he and its management disagreed about aspects of the zoo after his son Steve’s death. In a 2008 Australian Story interview, he said his ideas were often not heard and that leaving would let him, his wife Judy and their friends continue Steve’s work as Bob believed it should be done. He did not present a definitive private family dispute as the reason.
What Bob Irwin said about leaving
In the ABC’s Australian Story interview, broadcast on 7 April 2008, Bob described recurring disagreements with Australia Zoo management after Steve died in 2006. He said that when he visited, he would sometimes differ with someone or offer an idea that was not taken up. He characterized these as “fairly minor things on their own,” but said the pattern made him feel it was better for everyone if he left.
“The problem I had was that the management and I didn’t agree on certain aspects of Australia Zoo after Steve’s passing, because most times I went into Australia Zoo, I would have a difference of opinion with somebody or I may have an idea and it would not be listened to – fairly minor things on their own but I felt it was just better for everybody concerned if I left Australia Zoo and Judy and I and all our friends were able to continue Steve’s work the way I believe it should be done.”
Bob also described himself as becoming “a disrupting influence,” while stressing that this was not his intention. His explanation was about disagreements over the zoo’s management and direction, alongside his wish to carry on Steve’s work according to his own understanding of it.

Did Bob say a family feud was the real reason?
No. Bob explicitly declined to discuss private family matters in the ABC interview: “I don’t see why my family life and my personal issues should be aired publicly and there would be no way that I will discuss those with the media.” The transcript therefore supports his public explanation about management disagreements, but it does not establish one definitive private cause for the rift.

Later coverage connected the departure to claims about Australia Zoo’s commercial direction and to family estrangement. Those accounts provide retrospective context, not proof that a particular dispute or commercial plan was the single cause. PerthNow’s 24 June 2021 report used the “real reason” framing in its headline, but Bob’s detailed on-record explanation in the sources here is from 2008.
7NEWS’ retrospective account says Bob designed and built the Beerwah Reptile Park, which opened in 1970 and later became Australia Zoo. Its 2021 coverage also revisited family tensions; those reports should be read as attributed accounts rather than an independently established finding about Bob’s private motives.
