Bluesky said it gained more than 100,000 users after X announced a change to blocking, and the reported total reached 500,000 roughly 12 hours later. Futurism reported the figures on October 17, 2024, attributing them to Bluesky. They were not independently audited, and they do not show that every signup came from X or became a lasting migration.
What prompted the October 2024 surge?
X announced that accounts blocked by another user would still be able to view that user’s public posts. The change drew attention to a distinction many users may not expect: blocking limits interaction, but it does not make public posts invisible.
In its October 17, 2024 report, Futurism said Bluesky reported more than 100,000 new users after X’s announcement, with the stated total reaching 500,000 roughly twelve hours later. That is a platform-reported signup count, not an independently verified tally of active users or confirmed departures from X. The timing links the announcement and the influx, but does not establish that the policy change alone caused it.
Futurism also reported that the influx temporarily took Bluesky’s website offline. The report did not establish the outage’s duration, geographic reach, or technical cause; it is a detail of that 2024 event, not evidence about Bluesky’s current reliability.

Can someone you blocked on X still see your posts?
Yes, if the posts are public. X’s Help Center says blocked accounts can see public posts, but cannot follow the blocker, send them direct messages, or engage with their posts. Blocking restricts those interactions; it does not hide public content from the blocked account.
What changes if your posts are protected?
X says protected posts are visible only to followers and cannot be seen by blocked accounts. Protection is not a guarantee that followers cannot preserve or redistribute what they can see: X notes that followers may capture or share protected posts.

What did “handed creeps the keys” mean?
The phrase is a provocative way to describe the visibility change, not a literal transfer of account credentials or access keys. The concrete issue was that a blocked person could still view public posts while being barred from interacting with the blocker. Bluesky’s official account on X responded, “At Bluesky, we take online safety seriously.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the 500,000 figure does—and does not—tell you
- It was a reported signup figure: Futurism attributed the number to Bluesky; the cited report did not provide an independent audit.
- It does not identify every signup’s origin: The report does not establish that all new users came from X.
- It does not measure lasting migration: A signup is not proof that someone remained active or stopped using X.
- It does not prove a single cause: The timing supports an association with X’s announcement, not a definitive explanation for each registration.
The reported burst captures a moment of user concern about what blocking means on a public-post platform. It should not be read as evidence of Bluesky’s current growth, present-day platform reliability, or a continuing migration trend.
