Birmingham fans then sang it at the 1956 FA Cup Final at Wembley.
Who wrote “Keep Right On to the End of the Road”?
The song predates its connection with Birmingham City. A transcript of an anthem-history film made with the club says Scottish singer Harry Lauder wrote it in April 1924, remembering his son, Captain John Curry Louder, who died in the First World War. The transcript says its original title was “The End of the Road.” LNDN. – London Film & TV’s anthem-history transcript is the source for this account.
How did it become Birmingham City’s anthem?
The film transcript traces the club connection to the 1955–56 FA Cup campaign. On the way to the quarter-final against Arsenal on 3 March 1956, the players were singing to ease the tension. Scottish winger Alex Govern sang the song, his teammates joined in, and supporters who heard them outside the bus took it up too.
A separate secondary account tells a similar story, but spells the winger’s surname “Govan” and recalls manager Arthur Turner asking for a Scottish song. It quotes him saying, “I couldn’t sing ‘I Belong to Glasgow’, so I sang ‘Keep Right On to the End of the Road’ — it was the easiest one to sing.” Because the accounts differ on the surname, it is best not to treat either spelling as settled without a club or primary source. Football Nonsense’s account is the source of the quotation.

What does the song have to do with Wembley?
Birmingham reached the 1956 FA Cup Final, where the film transcript says supporters sang the anthem as the team faced Manchester City. The song also accompanied the club to Wembley later: a memoir excerpt by Mark Ward recalls Birmingham’s 1995 Auto Windscreens Shield final and says supporters would bring the anthem. That recollection is another Wembley association, not evidence for a particular crowd count. Ward’s memoir excerpt provides that account.
“Keep Right On” and Wembley’s FA Cup hymn are different traditions
“Keep Right On” is Birmingham City’s supporter anthem. Wembley Stadium’s official history identifies “Abide With Me” as the pre-final hymn tradition, dating from 1927. The two songs have different roles: one belongs to Birmingham’s club identity, while the other is associated with the FA Cup Final ceremony. Wembley Stadium opened on 28 April 1923; its operator describes the current venue as a 90,000-seat all-seater stadium. Wembley Stadium’s history page gives this context.

Is the 43,000 figure confirmed?
The accounts cited here do not verify that 43,000 people will sing “Keep Right On” at a Wembley event. They establish the song’s place in Birmingham City history and its presence at Wembley finals, but not the attendance or number of singers for a specific event. The figure should not be presented as confirmed without event-specific evidence.
