In May 2024, Joe Biden’s reelection campaign advertised a role focused on building day-to-day relationships with major online content and meme pages. The reported opening—titled “Partner Manager, Content and Meme Pages”—was part of the campaign’s effort to reach audiences through digital culture. TechCrunch reported pay of up to $85,000; available reporting does not establish whether the role was ultimately filled.

What was the Biden campaign hiring for?

TechCrunch reported on May 22, 2024, that the campaign was seeking a “Partner Manager, Content and Meme Pages.” The listing said the role would “initiate and manage day-to-day operations in engaging the internet’s top content and meme pages.” In practical terms, it was a campaign-staff position for coordinating outreach and relationships with online publishers and meme communities, rather than simply making memes in isolation. TechCrunch’s report described the opening and its duties.

Why bring meme pages into campaign outreach?

Campaigns compete for attention across online spaces as well as through conventional advertising and in-person organizing. A post shared by a popular page can circulate far beyond the campaign’s own accounts, which helps explain the interest in engaging those pages. That is a rationale for the role, not evidence that a particular meme changed voters’ minds or produced votes.

The campaign already had a recognizable example in Dark Brandon, a meme used on campaign accounts and connected to merchandise. TechCrunch also noted Trump campaign merchandise featuring his mugshot. Those examples show how campaign imagery can move between internet culture and political branding; the reporting does not establish that either approach was more effective. TechCrunch covered the examples.

What did the job pay?

TechCrunch reported that the listing offered pay of up to $85,000. This is the compensation reported for that 2024 opening, not a current salary figure or confirmation of what a successful hire was paid. The report does not establish whether the position was filled. See the report.

How does a paid meme role differ from volunteer meme organizing?

The job was a paid campaign role with stated responsibility for day-to-day engagement with content and meme pages. The reporting also described less centralized organizing: the “Markeyverse,” an organic online effort around Ed Markey’s 2020 Senate reelection campaign, and meme trainings led by the anonymous online persona Organizer Memes for groups including the South Carolina Young Democrats.

Those workshops reportedly involved making memes together, discussing what makes them work, and adapting existing templates to respond to breaking news. They illustrate different ways political groups use internet culture: a campaign can hire staff to manage partnerships, while volunteers and organizers can create and share material collectively. The accounts do not provide comparable measurements of either approach’s impact. TechCrunch’s coverage describes these organizing examples.

What does the Dark Brandon revenue figure actually show?

TechCrunch reported, attributing the figure to Axios, that Dark Brandon merchandise accounted for 54% of Biden campaign store revenue in August 2023. That figure applies to campaign-store revenue for that month. It is not a measure of the meme manager role’s results, overall online reach, voter persuasion, or electoral support. TechCrunch reported the statistic and its attribution.

What did the campaign’s approach aim to balance?

Annie Wu Henry, a creator and digital communications strategist, told TechCrunch: “I do think that we can and should infuse relevant, trendy and fun moments into how we are communicating, especially on digital platforms. But while we’re doing that, we need to continue to be strategic and intentional and mindful, even if it’s a meme.” Her point captures the tension in political meme-making: timely humor may attract attention, but a campaign still has to consider what it communicates and how it fits the broader message. The interview and quotation appeared in TechCrunch’s report.
