BET apologized on July 1, 2024, after parts of Usher’s Lifetime Achievement Award acceptance speech were muted during the live BET Awards telecast the previous night. The network attributed the silences to an “audio malfunction” and said the full, uninterrupted speech was available across BET platforms.
What happened during Usher’s BET Awards speech?
Usher received the 2024 BET Awards Lifetime Achievement Award on June 30. During the live broadcast, portions of his acceptance speech could not be heard by viewers at home. BET had announced him as that year’s recipient on May 30 and said the ceremony would air live from Los Angeles’s Peacock Theatre. BET’s announcement
The gaps in the broadcast, along with shots of attendees reacting, drew annoyance and prompted memes on X, according to the Los Angeles Times’ July 1 report.
What did BET say caused the muting?
In a statement posted July 1, BET said: “Due to an audio malfunction during the LIVE telecast, portions of his speech were inadvertently muted.” The network apologized to Usher, saying it was grateful for his participation in “Culture’s Biggest Night.” The statement identifies BET’s public explanation; the available reporting does not establish the precise engineering failure behind the audio problem.
