After Gold Coast ended his AFL coaching tenure in July 2023, Stuart Dew appeared at Australia’s training in Manchester ahead of the fourth Ashes Test. Dew later recalled that a planned one-session visit turned into three weeks around the team. The reporting describes an informal visit, not an appointment to Australia’s cricket coaching staff.
Why Gold Coast ended Dew’s coaching tenure
On 11 July 2023, the Gold Coast SUNS announced that Dew’s senior coaching role would conclude with immediate effect. The club said it had not seen the improvement it wanted during the 2023 season. Dew’s record at the club was 121 games, 36 wins, 84 losses and one draw — Gold Coast SUNS, 2023. The AFL later noted that Gold Coast stood at 7–7 before losses to Collingwood and Port Adelaide, amid the club’s view that it had regressed from 2022. What Dew was doing with Australia at the Ashes
On 18 July 2023, PerthNow reported that Dew had joined Australia’s training session in Manchester ahead of the fourth Ashes Test. The report said he was seen with Travis Head, Alex Carey and Scott Boland, and that he inspected the Old Trafford wicket. PerthNow, 18 July 2023.

That account establishes his presence in the training environment, not a formal cricket appointment. The available reporting does not identify a coaching role for Dew, say that the Australian team appointed him, or establish who initiated the visit.
How a one-session visit became three weeks
In a later interview with AAP, Dew described the visit as growing beyond his original plan: “I went to go to one training session and ended up three weeks in the inner sanctum so, pretty lucky to be in that scenario,” he said. What the Ashes cameo does—and does not—show
Dew’s brief appearance followed his sudden departure from Gold Coast and placed him around Australia’s squad during the 2023 Ashes. The reported facts support describing it as an informal visit that lasted longer than he expected. They do not support calling him an Australian cricket coach or assigning him duties beyond those specifically reported at the Manchester session.
