Reagan drew sharply different reactions from critics and audience raters, but the headline’s 19% Rotten Tomatoes figure should not be treated as a live score without checking the site. The film’s low critics’ score reflects the share of professional reviews classified as positive—not an average rating—and it does not explain why individual viewers responded differently.
What the Rotten Tomatoes scores mean
Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer is the percentage of professional critic reviews that are positive. Its Popcornmeter is the percentage of audience users who rated a film positively. Neither is an average star rating. A score of 60% or higher is labeled Fresh for critics; an audience score of 60% or higher corresponds to a full popcorn bucket. Rotten Tomatoes explains its rating system, including how audience scores can be viewed as Verified Ratings or as an All score that also includes ratings without verified attendance.

That means a gap between the two percentages describes a difference between the submitted review pools. It does not, on its own, establish why viewers liked the film, whether those users represent all moviegoers, or which group is right.
How large was the gap—and when?
The percentages have varied across dated snapshots. Family Theater Productions reported 18% critics and 98% audience in an article published Oct. 23, 2024. An Apple TV U.S. listing showed a 17% Tomatometer from 69 critics’ reviews when accessed in 2026: 12 Fresh and 57 Rotten. Those are attributed snapshots, not a verified current Rotten Tomatoes score. Rotten Tomatoes’ film page is the appropriate place to check the live score and rating counts before relying on a percentage. Scores can change as reviews and user ratings are added. Rotten Tomatoes’ *Reagan* page provides the film’s consensus and current viewing information, but the percentages should be recorded with the date they were checked.
Why critics were negative about the film
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus says: “While Reagan the movie undoubtedly admires Reagan the man, its cloying and glossy rendering of history flattens the 40th U.S. President into caricature.” That is the site’s summary of critical reception, not a quotation from one named reviewer. It points to a concern about the film’s treatment of history and its portrayal of Reagan, rather than simply expressing disagreement with the subject’s politics.
What the film is—and what its star said about it
Directed by Sean McNamara, the 2024 biographical drama stars Dennis Quaid as Ronald Reagan, Penelope Ann Miller as Nancy Reagan and Jon Voight as Viktor Petrovich. The story moves from Reagan’s small-town beginnings through Hollywood and national leadership, framed by Petrovich, a former KGB agent whose life becomes connected to Reagan’s. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 2-hour-21-minute runtime, a PG-13 rating, an Aug. 30, 2024 wide theatrical release and an Oct. 15, 2024 streaming release.
Quaid defended the film’s scope in an interview with Family Theater Productions, saying, “We show his successes, his triumphs, and his failures. We don’t sugarcoat anything here.” That is the actor’s assessment of the movie, not independent confirmation that its historical account is balanced.

Does the gap prove audiences loved it?
The 2024 audience figure was substantially higher than the critics’ figure, but an audience score is still a share of positive submitted ratings, not a survey of every person who watched the movie. Rotten Tomatoes’ verification process can indicate whether a rating is tied to a ticket purchase; it does not reveal an individual user’s motives. The available score snapshots therefore establish a difference in reception, not its cause.
They do not prove political bias, review manipulation, or a broad consensus among all viewers. Critics and audience users also need not be evaluating the film by the same standards: professional reviews often assess craft and historical presentation, while user ratings register each user’s overall reaction. The scores show where the pools diverged, not why.
Where to watch or find a physical copy
Rotten Tomatoes currently points viewers to Fandango for streaming, renting or buying, and Apple TV has a U.S. listing. Services, availability, prices and territorial rights can change, so check the relevant store in your region. Family Theater Productions reported that DVD and Blu-ray releases were scheduled for Nov. 19, 2024; confirm the edition, region and current retailer listing before buying.
