Most are all-in-one boomboxes with physical transports, speakers, amplifiers, batteries, radios, and features such as Bluetooth or USB. Their size also reflects the economics of a niche market: manufacturers often reuse existing mechanisms instead of funding an entirely new generation of ultra-thin hardware.
There is a genuine revival of interest in physical audio, especially cassette collecting, but it is not a return to mass-market dominance. Today’s products sell a complete, visible retro experience—part music player, part room object, and sometimes part collectible.
“Big” can mean several different products
A pocket cassette player, a portable CD player, a desktop CD deck, and a cassette/CD/radio boombox are very different engineering problems. A large modern unit may be bulky because it contains substantial speakers and a battery, not because the cassette or CD mechanism itself requires a huge enclosure.
Current products generally fall into several categories:

- Portable cassette players styled after classic Walkmans.
- Portable CD players with top-loading or side-loading mechanisms.
- Combination cassette, CD, radio, and Bluetooth boomboxes.
- Desktop cassette decks and CD transports.
- Bluetooth speakers designed to resemble old boomboxes but without tape or CD playback.
The most important distinction is between the transport—the mechanism that moves and reads the media—and the rest of the product. In a boombox, speakers, amplifier, power supply, controls, and enclosure volume may account for most of the size.
The short answer: physical mechanisms take space, and niche products reuse them
A cassette player needs a motor, capstan, pinch roller, supply and take-up reels, belt or gear drive, magnetic head, tape-path hardware, speed regulation, loading mechanism, and shock isolation. A CD player needs a spindle motor, disc clamp, optical pickup, loading system, motor-control electronics, digital-to-analog circuitry, and protection against skipping.
None of this is impossible to miniaturize. Classic Walkman-style cassette players proved that decades ago. The modern issue is commercial rather than purely technical. Cassette and CD hardware sells in relatively small volumes, so a manufacturer has little opportunity to recover the cost of designing, tooling, testing, certifying, and manufacturing a radically thinner transport.
Recent reporting by Hackaday describes many currently produced cassette players as being based on the same basic mechanism, with higher-end products making limited improvements such as metal flywheels. Reusing a proven design is cheaper than developing a new miniature transport for a niche market.

Why cassette mechanisms are awkward to shrink
A cassette is not simply a storage cartridge that slides past a sensor. The tape must be pulled at a controlled speed while remaining correctly aligned against the playback head. The capstan and pinch roller regulate movement; the reels manage the tape supply; the head must maintain consistent contact; and the entire path must tolerate vibration and imperfect tapes.
Making the mechanism thinner can create compromises in:
- Playback-speed stability and wow and flutter.
- Tape-path alignment and head contact.
- Mechanical durability.
- Battery efficiency.
- Manufacturing consistency.
- Repairability and access to belts or other wearing parts.
Older premium portable players benefited from enormous production runs, mature suppliers, specialized engineering teams, and models expensive enough to absorb development costs. A current low-volume player may instead use a readily available transport and place it inside a larger body that leaves room for the circuit board, battery, controls, and connectors.

That is why modern bulk should not be interpreted as proof that engineering has regressed. It reflects a different market. A high-end 1980s Walkman and a low-volume modern cassette player are not necessarily competing products, even if both are portable.
Why CD players are often bulky too
A standard audio CD is approximately 120 mm in diameter, so the disc establishes a minimum width for a portable player. Around it must fit the spindle, clamp, optical pickup, loading hardware, control electronics, and usually some form of shock protection.
A genuinely portable CD player can still be relatively thin. The large dimensions usually appear when manufacturers add the rest of the listening system:
- Full-range speakers and the enclosure volume they need.
- An amplifier and heat-management space.
- A larger battery or a compartment for disposable batteries.
- Radio circuitry and an antenna.
- Bluetooth, USB, auxiliary input, or MP3 playback.
- A cassette transport in combination models.
The disc mechanism dictates much of the product’s width, while the speakers and power system dictate much of its overall bulk. A device containing both cassette and CD transports is especially large because it combines two separate physical playback systems, each with its own motors, loading hardware, and controls.
Why manufacturers keep making all-in-one boomboxes
Combination products solve a practical problem for people with mixed collections. One unit can play old tapes, CDs, radio broadcasts, and music streamed from a phone. Some models also record cassettes or convert tape content to digital files.
They are useful in homes, classrooms, community spaces, workshops, and as gifts. They also resemble the products many buyers remember. Companies such as HamiltonBuhl sell multifunction media players that combine cassette, CD, radio, and digital features.
For manufacturers, the format is easier to explain and sell than a bare transport. “Cassette/CD/Bluetooth boombox” is a complete product proposition. The customer gets playback, amplification, controls, and a recognizable object in one purchase.

Modern retro players are hybrids, not purely old technology
Many current cassette players combine legacy mechanics with modern electronics. A product may contain a cassette transport alongside:
- Bluetooth audio reception.
- USB-C charging.
- Rechargeable batteries.
- Auxiliary input.
- Digital volume control.
- Class-D amplification.
- USB recording or MP3 conversion.
- Digital radio or microcontroller-based controls.
We Are Rewind is an example of this approach, pairing cassette playback with rechargeable power and Bluetooth. Its products are not attempts to recreate every limitation of a vintage player. They use the tape as the distinctive physical experience while adding conveniences that buyers expect from current electronics.
Bluetooth details matter. Some devices only receive music from a phone and use the player as a wireless speaker. Others can transmit tape or CD audio to wireless headphones. A listing that simply says “Bluetooth” does not establish which direction the connection works.
Sometimes the extra size is deliberate
Retro design rewards a substantial object. A larger body can make controls easier to see and operate, provide room for bigger speakers, and look more like the boomboxes people associate with the 1980s and 1990s. Heavy materials and visible buttons may also signal quality, even when they do not guarantee better sound or mechanics.
That object is often intended to sit in a room, appear in photographs, or become part of a collecting ritual. In that context, making it as small as possible would undermine part of the appeal. “Big” can be a design feature rather than an engineering failure.
Is there really a cassette comeback?
There is renewed cassette interest, but its scale needs careful qualification. New releases, limited editions, artist merchandise, independent labels, social-media trends, and younger listeners seeking tactile alternatives to streaming have all increased the format’s visibility.

The percentage increases sound dramatic partly because the starting base is small. Many buyers also purchase tapes as collectible merchandise and may not own a player. The revival is real as a niche cultural and commercial phenomenon, but cassettes remain tiny compared with streaming and other major music formats.
CD interest is a different story
CDs should not automatically be folded into the cassette revival. CDs remain widely available in used markets and have extensive catalogs, but the latest complete U.S. data do not show a broad CD sales comeback.
According to the RIAA’s 2025 report, U.S. CD shipments fell from 33.3 million in 2024 to 29.5 million in 2025. CD revenue declined from $338.9 million to $312.4 million. By comparison, streaming represented 82% of U.S. recorded-music revenue in 2025, with 106.5 million paid subscription accounts.
That does not mean CD players are pointless. CDs offer consistent playback, large catalogs, easy computer ripping, and often low second-hand prices. They can also be a lower-maintenance physical format than cassette. The visibility of new CD players may reflect people returning to existing collections, retailers serving a durable niche, audiophile interest, and demand for physical ownership—not a reversal of the overall sales trend.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why some new players sound disappointing
The format does not determine the quality of the entire product. A cassette can sound engaging, and a CD can provide excellent fidelity, but an inexpensive player may not demonstrate either format’s potential.
Common weak points in budget cassette products include cheap transports, poor head alignment, unstable speed, noisy motors, fragile doors, worn belts, and the absence of Dolby noise reduction. Small built-in speakers and weak amplifiers can hide the strengths of a good recording.
Budget CD units can also suffer from poor speakers, noisy amplification, unreliable disc tracking, limited disc compatibility, or weak recording circuitry. A CD’s digital source does not automatically produce a good listening experience if the analog output stage and speakers are poor.

- Good sound experience; with its stereo function; boombox can provide beautiful and immersive sound when playing different types of music; at festivals; you can use cd cassette player plays pleasant atmosphere songs and can also show its powerful volume at various parties; It is also a good gift choice
Physical media also has limitations. Tape can stretch, shed, suffer mold damage, or lose quality through poor storage. CDs can be scratched or delaminate. Neither format guarantees better sound simply because it is tangible.
New hardware versus vintage hardware
| Choice | Advantages | Drawbacks |
|---|---|---|
| New cassette or CD player | Warranty, returns, modern charging, Bluetooth, fresh belts and motors | Quality varies; mechanisms may be simplified or shared across many products |
| Vintage portable player or deck | Premium models may have better mechanisms, heads, motors, and noise reduction | Belts, idlers, capacitors, lasers, batteries, and switches may need service |
| Combination boombox | One device for tapes, CDs, radio, speakers, and streaming | Usually compromises transport quality, sound quality, size, or repairability |
A serviced high-end vintage deck can outperform a cheap modern cassette unit, but a vintage product sold as merely “working” may need immediate repair. Belts, pinch rollers, laser assemblies, battery contacts, and capacitors age whether or not the device has been used recently.
What to look for when buying
For casual cassette listening
- Check playback-speed stability and, where available, wow-and-flutter specifications.
- Prefer a headphone output if the built-in speakers are small.
- Confirm whether USB-C is for charging only or also for data and recording.
- Check whether Bluetooth receives phone audio, transmits tape audio, or does both.
- Look for a warranty, return policy, and evidence that belts or other parts can be replaced.
- Do not assume auto-reverse is an advantage; it adds mechanical complexity.
For cassette recording
Recording requires more than playback. Check the recording source, level controls, erase and record circuitry, microphone or line input, and whether the unit is intended for serious recording rather than occasional voice notes. A product that merely says “cassette player” may not record at all.
For CD listening
- Confirm support for standard audio CDs, CD-Rs, MP3 CDs, or data discs as required.
- Check whether the unit has headphone, line-level, optical, or Bluetooth output.
- For portable use, look for anti-skip performance and resume memory.
- For an all-in-one unit, judge the speakers separately from the CD transport.
- Check whether a replacement remote or optical assembly is available.
For mixed-format households
A cassette/CD/Bluetooth boombox is sensible when convenience matters more than audiophile performance. It is particularly useful for a household with both tapes and CDs, or for a classroom or community space. It is a poor choice if the primary goal is serious cassette recording, pocket portability, or the best possible sound from an existing amplifier and speakers.

A used CD player connected to powered speakers is often better value than a large all-in-one boombox. For cassette restoration or recording, consider a dedicated vintage deck from a trusted specialist and budget for servicing. For digitization, remember that a USB adapter does not automatically preserve the original sound: the playback head, alignment, analog circuitry, capture levels, and software all affect the result.
The bottom line
Modern cassette and CD players are big because they combine old mechanical formats with speakers, amplifiers, batteries, radios, controls, and modern wireless features. Many manufacturers also rely on existing transport designs because the niche market cannot easily support a ground-up miniature mechanism. At the same time, retro products are often intentionally substantial: buyers are purchasing a visible, tactile object rather than a hidden transport.
Cassette culture is experiencing a small revival from a very low base. CD players are attracting renewed interest, but U.S. CD shipments and revenue declined in 2025. The size of the hardware therefore says more about product design, niche economics, and the appeal of physical interaction than it does about a return to the era when every home needed a tape deck or CD player.
