Why Archaeologists Love—and Criticize—Indiana Jones

Indiana Jones made archaeology memorable, but his focus on seizing relics misrepresents a discipline built on evidence, context and collaboration.

Archaeologists’ response to Indiana Jones is mixed: the films have brought archaeology into the public imagination and inspired some people to explore the past, but Jones is a poor model of professional practice. His adventures turn archaeology into a race to seize spectacular objects, while real work depends on evidence, context, documentation and collaboration—and raises difficult questions about who has authority over cultural heritage.

Why archaeologists criticize Indiana Jones

The central objection is not that an adventure film contains danger or implausible stunts. It is that the franchise’s most recognizable archaeologist makes treasure hunting look like the purpose of the discipline. Archaeologists study past human lives through material evidence; an object matters partly because of what its location, relationships and traces can reveal. Laurie Miroff, director of the Public Archaeology Facility at Binghamton University, put it this way in Live Science: “the artifacts are the means to the end, not the end.”

Jones, by contrast, tends to identify a valuable relic, race to reach it and carry it away. That makes for clear cinematic stakes, but it can leave viewers with the wrong impression: that archaeologists are adventurers whose success is measured by the objects they recover. Archaeologist-authored commentary in Smithsonian Magazine and interviews in Live Science describe this as a deeper problem than a few inaccurate details. It misrepresents what archaeological evidence is for.

Excavation is not a harmless shortcut

Digging is not simply a way to uncover objects. It removes the layers and relationships archaeologists are trying to understand, so excavation is destructive in that specific sense: once a context has been excavated, it cannot be put back as it was. The Smithsonian discussion emphasizes why careful recording matters. A dramatic grab-and-go approach leaves little room for the documentation that makes finds interpretable.

Real archaeology involves research and planning before fieldwork, teamwork and recording during it, and specialist analysis and publication afterward. The Arizona State University account describes teams that can include professionals, specialists and students, with growing collaboration with local communities. Background research and remote sensing may help guide excavation; laboratory work and synthesis help make sense of what was found.

The films make authority look simple

Criticism also concerns who gets to decide what happens to heritage. The stories often center an outsider who claims the right to retrieve, remove or determine the fate of objects associated with other peoples. Petar Parvanov’s Smithsonian essay discusses both community authority and repatriation, and the white-savior framing of the return plot in Temple of Doom.

That issue reaches beyond a fictional character. In a May 12, 2026 essay, American Historical Association president James Grossman places Jones against the history of imperialist archaeological extraction and museum accumulation. Museums can serve important public and scholarly roles, while the origins of particular collections and requests for repatriation remain matters of debate. The question is not settled simply by declaring every museum object illegitimate—or by assuming that an adventurous outsider is entitled to decide where an object belongs.

Why some archaeologists love the franchise

The same visibility that creates a misleading stereotype can also draw people toward archaeology. Archaeologists interviewed by Live Science describe the films as a prompt for some young people to study the past and as a gateway to interest in museums, archaeological sites and documentaries. In National Geographic, archaeologist Janina Ramirez recounts that after seeing the first film, she sought out a local archaeology club.

Those accounts are meaningful testimony, not proof of a field-wide effect. The sources do not establish a reliable statistic for how many archaeologists were inspired by the movies or measure a causal impact. It is more accurate to say the films have been a starting point for some people than to claim that they made archaeologists as a group.

Archaeologists can enjoy the films’ reach while rejecting Jones’s methods. As National Geographic reports, Marilyn Johnson distinguishes embracing the character’s style and publicity from endorsing his methodology. Cornelius Holtorf, professor of cultural sciences at Linnaeus University, calls archaeology’s association with the character a powerful public asset: “In popular culture, archaeology is almost synonymous with Indiana Jones and [is] its strongest brand asset,” he told Live Science.

Indiana Jones versus professional archaeology

The contrast is not simply between exciting films and dull reality. Archaeological work can involve fieldwork and discovery, but its goals and responsibilities differ from an action hero’s. This comparison captures the distinction:

Aspect Indiana Jones on screen Professional archaeology
Goal Recover a powerful or spectacular relic Interpret past human lives through evidence and context
Method Improvise, pursue, seize and remove Plan, document, collaborate, analyze and publish
People and authority An outsider commonly makes the decisive call Teams work with specialists and increasingly with local communities; cultural authority matters
Outcome Possession, escape or loss drives the story Preserve context where possible, record evidence and interpret heritage responsibly

The practical difference is why even a short screen scene can matter. Grossman’s American Historical Association essay reflects on the lecture scene in The Last Crusade: “It appears that about one minute of scholarly archaeology was all that director Steven Spielberg thought Hollywood audiences could take—and he was probably right.” The line is a wry observation about cinema, not a claim that scholarship is unimportant or that audiences cannot engage with it.

Is Indiana Jones a realistic archaeologist?

No—not as a guide to how archaeology is normally practiced. The films are fictional adventure stories, not depictions of professional standards. Jones’s emphasis on speed, danger and taking possession of finds conflicts with a discipline in which context, careful records, analysis and questions of heritage authority are central.

One famous line should not be mistaken for a real measure of the job: Jones says “70 percent of all archaeology is done in the library.” The American Historical Association quotes it as movie dialogue, not as a measured statistic about how archaeologists divide their working time. The more reliable point is that archaeology extends well beyond excavation: research, field methods, laboratory analysis, interpretation and communication all contribute to the work.

What Indiana Jones gets wrong—and what the films can still do

The franchise’s biggest inaccuracies are about purpose and power, not just whether a particular tool or technique looks plausible. It makes the object seem like the prize rather than evidence; treats destruction of context as an acceptable cost of adventure; and often gives an outsider uncomplicated authority over heritage. Those conventions reflect older colonial adventure storytelling and sit uneasily beside contemporary attention to community participation, collection histories and repatriation.

Yet a fictional hero can open a door to questions the films do not answer well. Viewers can enjoy the suspense and still ask who made an object, what its archaeological context was, who has a stake in its interpretation, and whether removing it is justified. Archaeologists’ mixed response follows from that tension: Indiana Jones is an influential ambassador for public interest in the past, but a bad blueprint for doing archaeology.
