Apple TV’s French-language thriller The Hunt was temporarily pulled from its release schedule in November 2025 after allegations that its story resembled Douglas Fairbairn’s novel Shoot. Gaumont later said the series had been presented as original despite being based on an existing work, and that it sought the necessary authorizations. The series ultimately premiered on Apple TV on March 4, 2026.
Why was Apple TV’s The Hunt pulled?
The series had been scheduled to debut on December 3, 2025. In November, shortly before that date, Apple removed it from the schedule amid reports of similarities to Shoot, Fairbairn’s 1973 novel, and the novel’s 1976 film adaptation. The initial plagiarism claim was an allegation reported by French media journalist Clément Garin; it was not a legal finding.
At the time, producer Gaumont said it had temporarily postponed the broadcast and begun a thorough review, according to Variety’s November 27, 2025 report. Apple did not publicly address the allegations in the reporting cited here.
Was The Hunt based on a book?
Gaumont’s later account answered that directly. In a statement reported on February 19, 2026, the company said: “The Hunt‘s release was postponed after it was identified in November 2025 that the project, presented as an original work, was based on an existing work, Douglas Fairbairn’s Shoot.” Gaumont added that it “immediately took the necessary steps to identify the rights holders, and obtain the required authorizations.”

What is Douglas Fairbairn’s Shoot?
Shoot is Fairbairn’s 1973 novel, which also inspired a 1976 film. Reports about the controversy described similarities between its story and the series’ premise, but those reports are not an independent scene-by-scene comparison or a legal assessment.
