Hathaway called the chance to tell that story “the story of a woman blooming,” and said people keep coming of age throughout life.
Why Anne Hathaway connected with Solène’s story
In the film, Hathaway plays Solène Marchand, a 40-year-old single mother. After a difficult experience with her ex-husband, Solène is initially afraid to pursue an adventure. Hathaway said she was moved by the opportunity to portray her moving beyond that apprehension.
As quoted in Capital’s report of a PEOPLE interview, Hathaway said: “And so to me, I was incredibly moved by the opportunity to tell the story of a woman blooming.” Her explanation centers on Solène’s development, not simply the romance at the heart of the film.
What Hathaway meant by “blooming”
For Hathaway, growth is not something people finish in their youth. She put the idea plainly: “I don’t know why we don’t have more stories about human beings blooming at any age. We’re always coming of age, all the time.”

That outlook gives Solène’s apprehension and eventual openness their significance: the story treats change as possible in adulthood, too. It is Hathaway’s reading of this character’s journey, rather than a claim that every woman experiences midlife in the same way.
How the film relates to Robinne Lee’s novel
The Idea of You is adapted from Robinne Lee’s 2017 novel of the same name. Lee has said she developed the book from a conversation with her husband and drew on her teenage music fandom and experience in the entertainment industry. Those influences describe the novel’s origins; they are distinct from Hathaway’s stated reason for taking on the film.

The film’s younger singer, Hayes Campbell, is played by Nicholas Galitzine and belongs to the fictional boy band August Moon. Comparisons with Harry Styles and One Direction arise as audience associations, but that connection does not verify that Hayes or the band was modeled on a particular real person or group.
