Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor left Royal Lodge in early February 2026, months after Buckingham Palace announced that formal notice had been served to end his tenancy. The timing appeared to speed up after a new release of Epstein-related files, but the available reporting does not establish that the release caused his departure.
When was the move announced, and when did Andrew leave?
The announcement and the physical move were separate events. On 30 October 2025, Buckingham Palace said formal notice had been served to surrender the Royal Lodge lease and that Andrew would move to alternative private accommodation. The Palace also said he would be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor and that he continued to deny the allegations referenced in its statement. Buckingham Palace statement, 30 October 2025
The Crown Estate later told Parliament that Andrew had served a tenant’s notice on the same date, giving the minimum 12 months’ notice required by the lease. The notice period did not mean he had to remain at Royal Lodge for all 12 months: reports said he had left by 4 February 2026. The Crown Estate’s parliamentary evidence Sky News, 4 February 2026
Why did Andrew leave Royal Lodge early?
The chronology suggests the departure was brought forward: the Palace announced the lease surrender in October, and the move was reported in early February after the US Department of Justice released a new tranche of Epstein-related files. Contemporary coverage described the timing as accelerated, but the sources do not establish that the files caused the move or reveal the private decision-making behind it. Where did Andrew move after Royal Lodge?
Reports placed Andrew at Wood Farm Cottage on the Sandringham estate as temporary accommodation. Sky News said another move was expected once arrangements were completed; ABC reported Marsh Farm as the believed longer-term destination after renovations. Those reports distinguish the interim residence from an anticipated destination; they do not establish that the later move had already happened. Sky News, 4 February 2026 ABC News, 4 February 2026
What happens to the Royal Lodge lease and its costs?
The lease handover costs were not settled in the records cited. The Crown Estate said an expert inspection after the property was vacant would be needed to assess its condition, dilapidations and any potential compensation. The National Audit Office likewise described a possible compensation amount conditional on an assumed surrender date and an assessment of the property, not a confirmed payment.
