In BRATS, actor and director Andrew McCarthy returns to the “Brat Pack” label that shaped how he and other young actors of the 1980s were seen. His documentary follows him as he reconnects with former colleagues and, at its conclusion, meets journalist David Blum, whose 1985 New York Magazine story is credited with coining the phrase. The film is a personal reckoning—not proof that everyone involved made peace with the label in the same way.
What is BRATS about?
BRATS is a feature documentary written and directed by Andrew McCarthy, produced by NEON and Network Entertainment for ABC News Studios. It revisits the cultural legacy of films including The Breakfast Club and St. Elmo’s Fire, asking what it meant to be associated with the Brat Pack. ABC News Studios’ announcement describes McCarthy traveling to meet actors and production figures from that era, among them Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Jon Cryer, Lea Thompson and Timothy Hutton. The release page notes that many of the actors had not seen McCarthy for more than 30 years.

Disney+ lists the 2024 film at 1 hour 33 minutes. Its description poses the documentary’s central question: “What did it mean to be part of the Brat Pack?” The Disney+ listing provides a catalog entry, but streaming availability varies by territory and can change.
Why did McCarthy revisit the Brat Pack?
McCarthy has described the label as an enduring presence in his life and career. In ABC News Studios’ January 18, 2024 announcement, he said: “The Brat Pack has cast a long shadow over my life and career. After all these years, I was curious to see how it had affected my fellow Brat Pack members. What I found was surprising — and liberating.” The film turns that curiosity into a series of conversations: rather than treating the label as a settled piece of movie history, McCarthy asks people who lived through it how they remember its effects.

The title points to the distance between the label’s public life and the people attached to it. A group of films and performers became shorthand for a generation, but that shorthand did not necessarily match the actors’ own experience of their work, careers or relationships.
What did “Brat Pack” mean, and who belonged to it?
ABC News Studios dates David Blum’s New York Magazine cover story to 1985. The Associated Press describes “Brat Pack” as a playful turn on “Rat Pack”; TIME situates the phrase among young actors associated with The Breakfast Club and later hits such as St. Elmo’s Fire and Pretty in Pink. The term became a widely recognized cultural label, but the sources do not establish a universally agreed membership list. It is more accurate to describe it as a label applied to a loose set of actors linked in public conversation to those films than as the name of a formal group.
How do the film’s participants view the label?
The retrospective accounts are not unanimous. In its review, TIME reports distinct interpretations: Emilio Estevez felt Blum’s story fostered a perception that the actors were “lightweights”; Jon Cryer read its thrust as a rebuke to young actors supposedly getting too big for their boots; Rob Lowe described the films as part of a wave aimed at young adults that marked its era. TIME also notes that Ally Sheedy and Demi Moore offered different perspectives, and that Molly Ringwald declined to participate. These are reactions reported by the review, not a comprehensive consensus or a verbatim transcript of every interview.
That divergence is central to understanding the film’s premise. One person may remember the label as a career burden, another may focus on the films’ cultural place, and another may have a different relationship to the story altogether. McCarthy’s interviews present individual recollections rather than a single verdict on whether the label was good or bad.

What happens when McCarthy meets David Blum?
McCarthy’s conversation with Blum appears at the film’s conclusion. The AP review reports Blum saying: “I mean, I guess in retrospect, yes. At the time, no. I was proud of the creation of the phrase.” AP describes the meeting ending with a hug. Blum’s remark, as reported by AP from the film, adds a personal exchange to a story often discussed as a piece of media history; it does not establish that every actor shared the same resolution.
Where can you watch BRATS?
ABC said the film premiered in the United States on Hulu on June 13, 2024, following its world premiere at the 2024 Tribeca Festival, and would later arrive on Disney+ in select territories. Disney+ has a catalog listing for the film, but the availability of any title depends on the viewer’s country and may change. Check the local Hulu or Disney+ catalog for current access.

Is McCarthy’s book connected to the documentary?
McCarthy’s memoir, Brat: An ’80s Story, is a related first-person account of his experience. ABC News Studios identifies the book alongside the documentary, but does not present BRATS as an adaptation of it. The film is its own project, built around McCarthy’s conversations with former colleagues and Blum.
