Anderson Cooper repeatedly tried to cut off Andy Cohen after Cohen began criticizing outgoing New York Mayor Eric Adams on CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live, just after midnight on January 1, 2026. Cooper’s interruptions and apparent attempt to leave the shot made him look uncomfortable on air, but the available reporting does not establish that he was privately angry or that the longtime co-hosts had a falling-out.
What happened during the broadcast?
According to Tom Latchem’s account in The Daily Beast, Cohen began talking about Adams’s mayoralty at about 12:10 a.m., shortly after the Times Square ball drop. Cooper interrupted with, “Oh no. I’m out.” When Cohen tried to continue, Cooper said, “Don’t,” and appeared to move as if to leave the shot.
Cohen continued criticizing Adams and said the former mayor “got his pardons.” Cooper again said, “I’m out,” then added, “He can’t help himself.” Guest B.J. Novak also tried to defuse the exchange. The report describes Cooper as cringing and attempting to shut down Cohen’s political commentary.
Was Anderson Cooper actually upset with Andy Cohen?
The on-air behavior supports saying Cooper appeared exasperated or uncomfortable: he interrupted Cohen several times and seemed ready to disengage. But the report does not include a later statement from Cooper about his feelings, nor does it establish a private argument or lasting dispute between the hosts. The incident is best understood as a visible on-air clash over Cohen’s remarks, not proof of a personal feud.

What did Andy Cohen say about Eric Adams?
Cohen criticized Adams’s mayoral tenure and what he had left behind as he exited City Hall. His reference to Adams’s “pardons,” however, was inaccurate according to The Daily Beast’s account: a judge dismissed the federal corruption charges against Adams with prejudice on April 2, 2025. That was a judicial dismissal, not a presidential pardon.

The Daily Beast reported that Cohen and Cooper had co-hosted CNN’s New Year’s Eve special for nine consecutive years by the 2025–26 broadcast. Their established on-air partnership provides context for the moment, but does not by itself show what either host thought of the exchange afterward.
