In the cases described publicly, the medal attachments separated; reports do not establish that the gold medal bodies themselves fractured. Organisers said they had identified a targeted fix and asked affected athletes to return medals for repair.
What happened to Liu and Johnson’s medals?
On 8 February 2026, US skier Breezy Johnson won the women’s downhill and showed reporters that her medal and ribbon had come apart. Alysa Liu, a member of the US figure-skating team that won gold, posted video showing her medal detached from its ribbon. BBC Sport and RTÉ News reported Johnson’s case on 10 February; CBS News reported Liu’s video on 9 February.
They were not the only athletes reported to have medal problems. Coverage also named Sweden’s cross-country skier Ebba Andersson and German biathlete Justus Strelow. The reports described a limited number of cases, but did not establish a final count.
Why were the medals coming away?
Contemporaneous reports connected the problem to the medal cord’s breakaway mechanism, a safety feature required by law. That points to the attachment rather than proving that the medal itself was defective or broken.

The available reporting does not identify a specific failed part, provide an engineering analysis, or explain exactly how organisers’ fix works. A precise technical cause therefore remains unconfirmed.
What did organisers do?
At an early briefing, Milano Cortina chief games operations officer Andrea Francisi said organisers were investigating: “We are fully aware of the situation and you have seen the pictures. We are looking into what exactly the problem is,” The Guardian reported on 9 February 2026.

By 10 February, organisers said they had identified a solution and put a targeted fix in place. They asked athletes with affected medals to return them through the appropriate channels so they could be repaired and returned, according to BBC Sport. The announcement describes repair as the general remedy; it does not explain the repair procedure or specify that every athlete would receive a replacement.
Did Johnson receive a replacement medal?
Yes, according to RTÉ’s 10 February report: Johnson said she had been given a new gold medal and still needed to have it engraved. The report also said she had to return the old one. That is Johnson’s individual outcome, not evidence that all affected athletes received replacements instead of repairs.

Is this the same problem as the Paris 2024 medal issue?
No shared cause has been established. In a separate report about the Paris 2024 Summer Games, the BBC said 220 medal replacement requests had been made by February 2025 because of wear and tear, and reported that some Paris medals showed tarnishing. That figure concerns requests for Paris medals, not broken or affected Milano Cortina medals; it does not establish that the two incidents had the same cause.
