Akaza’s past makes him heartbreaking not because his suffering can be objectively ranked above every other demon’s, but because the film sets his fearsome strength against the human attachments and grief that shaped him. The reveal changes how his present-day fight reads: Upper Rank Three is no longer only a powerful enemy, but a person whose life before becoming a demon gives his violence a painful context.

Where Akaza’s story fits in Infinity Castle
The official Japanese film introduction frames Infinity Castle as the start of the final battle, after Muzan draws Tanjiro and the Demon Slayer Corps into the demons’ stronghold. It is the first installment of a three-part adaptation. The film follows Hashira Training and brings the story into its endgame, where the battles are inseparable from the characters’ histories.
Akaza enters that conflict with an established record: he is Upper Rank Three, and he previously fought Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku. The official U.S. character page identifies Akaza with the pursuit of the highest level of martial prowess. That relentless focus makes the shift to his human past especially affecting.

Why Hakuji’s backstory hurts
The flashback centers on Hakuji, the human being Akaza once was, and his bond with martial artist Keizo and Keizo’s daughter, Koyuki. GamesRadar’s September 16, 2025 account describes the relationship, the losses surrounding them, and the violence that precedes Hakuji’s transformation. That summary is a secondary report of the story; it is best understood as an account of the backstory rather than a claim that every detail is shown in precisely the same way on screen.
The emotional force comes from the contrast: Akaza’s present identity is built around strength, but the story traces him back to human connections and grief. His past does not erase the harm he causes as a demon. Instead, it gives that harm a tragic context and asks viewers to hold two truths together: he is a dangerous antagonist, and he was once a person shaped by attachments and loss.

What makes this backstory feel different
Calling it “the most heartbreaking” is a judgment, not an objective ranking. A useful way to explain the reaction is to look at three elements: how much Hakuji loses, how clearly the story establishes his bonds before those losses, and how the revelation changes the audience’s view of Akaza. Those elements make the flashback more than a tragic origin story; they alter the emotional meaning of a fight viewers already know.
- Attachment before loss: Keizo and Koyuki give Hakuji meaningful human relationships before the story turns toward tragedy.
- Power against vulnerability: The martial prowess associated with Akaza stands in sharp contrast to the painful human history revealed beneath it.
- Reframing, not excusing: The past deepens the character without making his choices or violence harmless.
Where to read the manga story
Readers who want the manga can look to VIZ’s official Volume 18 listing. VIZ describes the volume as continuing the battle involving Tanjiro, Giyu, and Akaza. Its paperback ISBN is 978-1-9747-1760-6, and the listed English-language release date is November 3, 2020. The price and retailer inventory may change.

Franchise context
The official film introduction says the manga ran from February 2016 through May 2020 and was collected in 23 volumes. It reports 220 million copies in circulation, but does not establish when that milestone was first announced, so it should not be read as a 2026 sales total. The same page gives Mugen Train’s earlier performance as approximately 41.35 million worldwide admissions and 51.7 billion yen in box-office revenue; those figures concern the previous film, not Infinity Castle.
Netflix Tudum’s surfaced feature describes Infinity Castle as a 2025 R-rated film with a listed runtime of 2 hours 34 minutes and identifies Channing Tatum as the English-dub voice of Keizo. Netflix Tudum’s film page is the place to check for current streaming information; release timing and availability can differ by territory.
