The remark was Chatfield’s opinion, not an established fact about Lively’s character.
What Abbie Chatfield said
In a podcast discussion reported by Geo News on August 21, 2024, Chatfield said: “Blake is a deeply unlikeable person. She is claiming this movie is for domestic violence survivors, but she isn’t talking about the DV in it.” She also said: “You can’t do a film about a serious topic like this and not want to speak about that topic and act offended when people ask about it.”
Chatfield’s sharpest language was part of her criticism of the film’s publicity and Lively’s public response to questions, as Chatfield characterized it. It should be read as a commentator’s judgment, not as a verified description of Lively or a finding about who controlled the film’s marketing decisions.
Why the marketing became a point of criticism
It Ends With Us adapts Colleen Hoover’s 2016 novel, whose story includes intimate-partner violence. That subject matter shaped debate over whether the film’s publicity communicated its seriousness. TIME reported that some viewers objected to promotional messaging they considered too light, including an invitation to “grab your friends and wear your florals.”

The disagreement was about tone and emphasis: critics wanted the campaign to acknowledge the violence at the center of the story, while floral imagery and upbeat messaging could read as a conventional romance-film promotion. The cited coverage documents that criticism; it does not amount to a comprehensive audit of the campaign or establish that Lively alone decided how it was presented. TIME’s explainer also cautioned that online speculation claiming a rumored cast feud was deliberately staged as marketing had no proof in its coverage.
How to understand the dispute
- The film’s subject: The story’s intimate-partner-violence themes made the promotional tone a substantive issue for some viewers, rather than simply a debate over taste.
- The criticism: Chatfield argued that publicity should address that subject directly. Her “deeply unlikeable” description was her own opinion.
- The limits of the evidence: Reports of audience objections show that some viewers found the campaign mismatched to the story. They do not establish a single person’s exclusive control of campaign choices or prove an intent to minimize the subject.
- Book and film: The movie is an adaptation of Hoover’s 2016 novel. The available coverage does not provide a systematic comparison of how the book and film handle the subject.
How later reporting changed the context
After the film’s release, publicity around It Ends With Us became entangled with the wider dispute between Lively and director and co-star Justin Baldoni. In December 2024, the Associated Press reported allegations in Lively’s complaint and a response from Baldoni’s attorney. Those are disputed claims and responses, not findings established by that AP report.

The AP also quoted Baldoni addressing criticism of the film’s treatment of domestic violence: “If anybody has had that real-life experience, I can imagine how hard it would be to imagine their experience being in a romance novel,” he said. “To them, I would just offer that we were very intentional in the making of this movie.” That is Baldoni’s account of the production’s intent, not independent proof of how survivors experienced the film or its promotion. The Associated Press report describes the competing claims and response.

Because the film is based on Hoover’s 2016 novel, reading the book can offer a direct way to compare the source story with its screen adaptation. That comparison is separate from Chatfield’s criticism of the marketing: the cited coverage establishes the adaptation relationship and the publicity debate, but does not settle how closely the film handles every element of the novel or whether its campaign adequately represented survivors’ experiences.
