Its chant-like hook was easy to repeat, fans turned it into lip-syncs, dances and memes on TikTok and elsewhere, and the song arrived during Pride season to an audience that already included many queer fans. Those factors worked together; the available reporting does not show that TikTok alone caused the hit, or establish how large Minogue’s younger audience is today.
Why “Padam Padam” caught on
A hook people could make their own
The song’s repeated “padam” refrain is brief, recognizable and simple to quote. That made it well suited to social posts: listeners could lip-sync to it, remix it or build a dance around it without needing to reproduce a whole song. ABC News reported those kinds of TikTok uses, while The Guardian described fan dances and memes. The reporting documents how people participated, not how much each format contributed to streams or chart position.
Minogue herself described the song’s spread as a form of shared ownership. When it reached the UK Top 10 in June 2023, she told Official Charts: “This is truly amazing and 19 year old me would say the same thing! I am so thankful to everyone involved with Padam Padam and am astounded at how people have made it their own. The song belongs to everyone now and I’m loving every second of it.”
A wider social moment
The song also found a receptive context. Minogue had a longstanding queer fanbase, and its upbeat, celebratory character resonated with some listeners during Pride season. ABC News quoted USC scholar Karen Tongson, who studies pop culture and gender, saying: “There’s something about the release of Padam Padam that coincided with this sort of moment of despair and conflict,” followed by, “And that reminded us of the kind of intensity, lightness and kind of queer joy, the celebratory nature of queerness.”

That helps explain why some listeners embraced the track as a queer anthem; it does not mean every LGBTQ+ listener experienced it the same way, or that all new listeners found it through queer communities. The song’s social-media circulation and its cultural resonance overlapped rather than offering competing explanations.
How the 2023 attention showed up in the charts
The attention was reflected in several dated milestones. The Official Charts Company reported that “Padam Padam” reached No. 9 in the UK in June 2023. BMG later reported that it spent four weeks in the UK Top 10. In September 2023, GRAMMY.com reported a No. 7 position on the US Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.

BMG’s September 22, 2023 announcement for the album Tension also reported 157 million global streams for “Padam Padam.” That is the label’s figure as reported at the time, not a current streaming total. Together, these numbers show that the song’s online visibility translated into chart recognition in 2023; they do not prove a single cause for its performance.
Why the rediscovery felt different from a newcomer’s breakout
For many younger listeners, “Padam Padam” was an entry point to an established artist, not a debut from someone unknown. Minogue had already built a career through successive hits and reinventions. ABC News noted in its June 18, 2023 feature that, as of that report, she had seven UK No. 1 singles and eight UK No. 1 albums, with 30 combined weeks at the top of the charts. The Guardian framed the new attention as another of several Minogue resurgences.

That contrast made the moment striking: a new generation could encounter a current, shareable pop song first, then discover that its singer had decades of music behind it. Chart analyst and historian James Masterton told The Guardian in May 2023: “She has bridged a generation gap with a hit record that is reaching out both to her loyal (and ageing) acolytes but also a new generation of music fans.”

“Padam Padam” was the immediate trigger, but its reach makes most sense as a convergence: an easy-to-repeat song, participatory social formats, an existing audience and a timely cultural connection. Minogue’s long career gave the rediscovery added meaning. The reporting from 2023 captures that episode, but it does not quantify how many young people became fans or establish their level of interest in 2026.

For a starting point beyond the single, Tension is the album associated with “Padam Padam.” Minogue described its approach to BMG in September 2023: “I started this album with an open mind and a blank page. Unlike my last two albums, there wasn’t a ‘theme’, it was about finding the heart or the fun or the fantasy of that moment and always trying to service the song. I wanted to celebrate each song’s individuality and dive into that freedom. I would say it’s a blend of personal reflection, club abandon, and melancholic high.”
