The genie in the documented 1996 film Kazaam was played by Shaquille O’Neal, not Sinbad. The supposed Sinbad movie, usually remembered as Shazaam, is a persistent pop-culture memory—but the sources that document the recollection do not establish that a 1990s feature by that name was released. Why people remember it remains unresolved; several overlapping associations offer plausible clues, not a proven explanation.
What was the real Shaq genie movie?
Kazaam was released in 1996, with Shaquille O’Neal playing the genie. FOX 26 Houston distinguishes that film from the later Sinbad parody: FOX 26 Houston’s report on Kazaam and the parody.
Was there a Sinbad movie called Shazaam?
The USC Digital Folklore Archives records the recollection as “a movie about a genie called ‘Shazaam’, where Sinbad played him.” That entry documents the remembered story, not a release or a surviving film. The available sources support describing Shazaam as a widely discussed memory, not as a verified 1990s movie: USC Digital Folklore Archives entry.
Sinbad himself addressed the mix-up in a Q&A response reproduced by a Mandela Effect community page: “it was SHAQ SHAQ SHAQ / but we all look alike”. The page says the answer came from a 2014 Q&A; it is a secondary reproduction of his comment: Mandela Effect community post reproducing Sinbad’s reply.

Why might the two memories have blended?
No source establishes one cause for the shared recollection. In a 2017 Scriptnotes discussion, screenwriter Craig Mazin stated, “The movie did not exist. At all.” The conversation explored possible associations rather than demonstrating a definitive mechanism: 2017 Scriptnotes transcript.
- The titles sound alike. Kazaam and the remembered Shazaam are similar enough that details associated with one could be recalled under the other name.
- Sinbad’s name may cue genies. The discussion raised the possibility that the name evokes the familiar fantasy-adventure world of genies, making him seem like a fitting star in retrospect.
- Other family-film memories may overlap. Participants mentioned Sinbad’s film First Kid as another possible association. That is a proposed link, not proof that it created the memory.
These suggestions can help explain why the recollection feels coherent without proving how any particular person formed it. The existence of many online accounts likewise documents the folklore, not a lost release; the USC archive and community discussion do not provide a reliable count of how many people remember it.

What about the Sinbad genie video?
Sinbad did later appear in a genie video made as an April Fools satire by CollegeHumor. FOX 26 Houston identifies it as a later parody, not footage from a 1990s movie. It may have strengthened the association for people who encountered it, but it cannot establish that the remembered feature existed: FOX 26 Houston on the satirical video.
How the documented film and remembered one differ
| Question | Kazaam | Shazaam |
|---|---|---|
| Release evidence in the cited sources | Documented 1996 release (FOX 26 Houston, report). | Recollections and discussion are documented; the cited sources do not establish a released feature (USC Digital Folklore Archives, entry). |
| Genie actor | Shaquille O’Neal (FOX 26 Houston, report). | Sinbad is named in the recollection, but no released film is established (USC Digital Folklore Archives, entry). |
| What the available material represents | A documented film. | Recorded memories and later discussion; the Sinbad genie clip was satire, not a 1990s feature (FOX 26 Houston, report). |
Why the memory can feel certain
A vivid recollection is evidence that someone remembers an event; it is not, by itself, evidence that the remembered film was released. Here, the similarity of the titles, the real Kazaam, and the later parody provide plausible points of overlap. But the cited accounts do not settle why the memory formed, and they do not support diagnosing every person who shares it with the same explanation.
