What is the film called, and when was it scheduled to release?
Marvel’s later official title is The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The announced U.S. theatrical date was July 25, 2025; it is a past release date, not a current upcoming-release listing. Marvel’s announcement and film-page indexed excerpts identified that date, and D23 also referred to it in its July 2025 features.
What is the story and setting?
D23 describes the movie as set in a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic alternate universe called Earth-828. It is not an origin story: the story begins four years after the four characters were exposed to cosmic rays. In this world, they are a family as well as public figures and leaders.

D23’s July 14, 2025 feature connects the production design to the Fantastic Four’s comic-book roots and the optimism associated with the team. The characters were created for Marvel Comics by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, whose work is among the film’s stated inspirations.

Director Matt Shakman describes the team as “the source of optimism and inspiration for their entire world,” as reported by D23. Production designer Kasra Farahani said, “We decided it would be the manifestation of the future we were promised in the pulp artwork from the ’50s and ’60s.” These are comments in an official Disney-owned editorial feature, not independent critical assessments.
In D23’s July 24, 2025 cast feature, Joseph Quinn said, “When you know someone knows the way that you feel, that’s a very sacred thing.” Pedro Pascal said, “I think one of its strengths is its aesthetic,”
