Descendants: The Rise of Red, the fourth Descendants film, brings back two performers from the original trilogy: China Anne McClain as Uma and Melanie Paxson as Fairy Godmother. Disney announced the fourth film’s Disney+ premiere for July 12, 2024, and described both actors as reprising their roles.
Which original Descendants actors returned?
China Anne McClain as Uma
McClain returns as Uma, the daughter of Ursula. In The Rise of Red, Uma is the principal of Auradon Prep. Disney’s cast announcement identifies McClain as returning to the role.
Melanie Paxson as Fairy Godmother
Paxson also reprises her role, returning as Fairy Godmother. Disney’s announcement names her among the performers from the earlier films who are back for the fourth installment.
Which original trilogy stars are not in the fourth film?
The original trilogy’s four central stars were Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Sofia Carson, and Booboo Stewart. They are not included in Disney’s announced cast list for The Rise of Red. Cameron Boyce died in 2019, so he could not return for a new live-action film; the other three are likewise not part of the fourth film’s announced cast.

Who else is in The Rise of Red?
The fourth film also features Kylie Cantrall, Malia Baker, Brandy, Rita Ora, Dara Reneé, Ruby Rose Turner, Morgan Dudley, Joshua Colley, Peder Lindell, Grace Narducci, Jeremy Swift, Paolo Montalban, and Leonardo Nam. Brandy plays Cinderella, Rita Ora plays the Queen of Hearts, and Montalban plays King Charming. They are part of the fourth film’s cast, but Disney does not describe them as returning performers from the original Descendants trilogy. D23’s cast overview provides additional details.
Is there a fifth Descendants movie?
Yes. Disney announced a fifth installment in February 2025 and gave it the title Descendants: Wicked Wonderland in May 2025. At that time, Disney said the film was in production and planned for a 2026 release on Disney Channel and Disney+. That is a separate film: it does not change which original-trilogy performers returned for The Rise of Red.
