Whoopi Goldberg did not suffer a medical collapse on The View. During a September 24, 2024 segment, she fell backward into her chair, pretended to pass out, and quickly sent the show to a commercial break while guest Michael Eric Dyson was attacking Mark Robinson. The moment was a staged, comic reaction, and the report that describes it, published by Entertainment Weekly the same day, describes no medical emergency.
What happened in the September 24, 2024 segment
The episode aired during the show’s Hot Topics discussion. Co-host Sara Haines raised reported comments about Robinson, and Dyson, identified by Entertainment Weekly as an author and minister, responded with a sharp criticism of Robinson and Donald Trump. The sequence, as Entertainment Weekly’s Joey Nolfi described it on September 24, 2024 at 1:04 p.m. ET, ran roughly like this:

- Haines introduces the Robinson material. She raises reported comments about Robinson as the topic for the panel.
- Dyson makes his remarks. He contrasts Robinson with Martin Luther King Jr. and describes Robinson’s expressed ideas as “white supremacist ideas.”
- Goldberg reacts physically. During Dyson’s remarks she falls backward into her chair and pretends to pass out.
- The show breaks away. Goldberg quickly moves the program to a commercial break.
- Sunny Hostin laughs. According to the report, Hostin laughs at a later, explicit remark by Dyson.
Nothing in the account describes an injury, a call for medical help, or a health concern. The reaction was performed for comic effect within a heated exchange.
Why the headline’s word “collapses” is misleading
The phrase “Whoopi Goldberg collapses” reads as a physical emergency, and that is the reading this article corrects. A more accurate description is “pretended to pass out,” “comic collapse,” or “dramatic on-air reaction.” The word “collapse” appears in the headline and article framing, but the report itself makes clear that the faint was feigned. Readers searching for whether Goldberg was hurt should treat the segment as a performance, not a health event.

What Dyson said, and how to attribute it
Dyson’s remarks are political characterizations and should be attributed to him as opinion. Entertainment Weekly quotes him saying:
- “This is white supremacy by ventriloquism. Black mouth moving, white supremacist ideas coming out.”
- “Bro, Robinson, you ain’t no Martin Luther King, Jr. If Dr. King had a dream, you are a nightmare.”
Those lines are Dyson’s rhetoric about Robinson’s views. They are not independently verified findings, and quoting them without that attribution would overstate what the segment established.

The allegation Haines raised
Haines raised an allegation that Robinson had called himself a “Black Nazi.” Entertainment Weekly reports that Robinson told CNN the claim was “tabloid trash.” The allegation and Robinson’s denial are both reported claims. Neither was independently assessed in the reporting on this segment, so this article does not treat the allegation as established.

- A 2025 court-collapse story about Goldberg. Lead Stories (Maarten Schenk, May 19, 2025) identified it as fictional and built on AI-generated imagery. It describes a lawsuit that did not happen and has no connection to the 2024 broadcast.
- A clip of a guest interrupting Will Hurd. PolitiFact (Ciara O’Rourke, August 8, 2023) found the clip had been altered. It is a separate matter from the Dyson segment.
Neither fact-check involves a medical collapse by Goldberg, and neither should be cited as evidence about the September 2024 episode.

The core facts of this article rest on a single detailed report: Entertainment Weekly, September 24, 2024. Its account of the pretend faint, the commercial break, and Dyson’s quoted remarks is the basis for the description here. No statistics or studies are part of the story. Goldberg’s age appears in that report, but it has no bearing on what happened on air, so it is omitted here.
