On The View on Dec. 9, 2024, Whoopi Goldberg urged viewers not to live in panic while waiting to see what Donald Trump would do after taking office. Ana Navarro argued that people facing more direct consequences had reason to take his statements seriously and prepare. Their disagreement was about both how to read Trump’s comments before his second inauguration and who could afford to wait.
What prompted the exchange
The hosts were discussing Trump’s weekend appearance on Meet the Press and his comments about the Jan. 6 investigative committee, according to TheWrap’s Dec. 9, 2024 report. The conversation turned to how alarmed people should be about the incoming administration.

Goldberg’s case against panic
Goldberg said Trump made noise in ways that kept people panicked. As TheWrap reported her remarks, she encouraged viewers to spend the time before his return to office with family, do their jobs, and take care of themselves while they waited to see what happened. Her position was to avoid allowing anticipation to consume daily life.
Goldberg also objected to what she understood Navarro to be urging, saying that Navarro was telling people to remain fraught. TheWrap quoted Goldberg saying Trump “does this to keep you all in a panic.”

Navarro’s argument for preparation
Navarro answered that the hosts were speaking from a relatively privileged position. She argued that people who might be more directly affected by policy changes—including immigrants without legal status and women working at the Department of Defense—had reason to worry and prepare. Her point was not that every feared outcome had already occurred, but that waiting for events to unfold could leave some people less ready.
Navarro made the distinction explicit: “No, I’m telling people to prepare, Whoopi!” TheWrap also quoted her saying, “So when Donald Trump says something, believe him people, believe him. There’s nothing to wait for.” These lines are attributed to Navarro in TheWrap’s account; the original episode transcript was not available for independent comparison.

What the disagreement was really about
The exchange can be understood through three questions:
- How to interpret statements before taking office: Goldberg emphasized waiting to see what actions followed; Navarro urged viewers to take Trump’s statements seriously in advance.
- Whether waiting is protective or risky: Goldberg’s approach sought to limit needless alarm and preserve focus on ordinary responsibilities. Navarro’s approach treated preparation as prudent for people who could face immediate consequences.
- Who bears the possible costs: Navarro argued that exposure to policy changes would vary by legal status and occupation, so the hosts’ relative security was not a universal measure of how much concern was warranted.
Those were arguments about how to respond to uncertainty in December 2024, before Trump’s second inauguration—not proof that any particular outcome discussed by the hosts would occur.

Why the date matters
This was a specific The View conversation aired on Dec. 9, 2024, before Trump’s second inauguration. It should not be conflated with later disputes or developments. TVLine also covered the exchange and said its article embedded video of the discussion: TVLine’s report. The quoted dialogue here follows the written reporting, rather than a full ABC transcript.
