J. M. Barrie wrote the story behind Neverland, the fictional place that gave Michael Jackson’s ranch its name.
What is Neverland in the story?
Neverland is Peter Pan’s fictional destination. In J. M. Barrie’s story, Peter takes Wendy, John and Michael there. A Western Sydney University-hosted thesis identifies Jackson’s Santa Barbara ranch as Neverland and connects its name to Barrie’s fictional setting. That source supports the connection as background; it is not a statement by Jackson about why he chose the name.
When did Peter Pan first appear in a book?
The familiar book version appeared in 1911 as Peter and Wendy, written by J. M. Barrie. Peter Pan had appeared earlier: first in a section of Barrie’s 1901 novel The Little White Bird, then as a stage play in 1904. The book was later titled Peter Pan and Wendy.
