Yu Menglong, also known as Alan Yu, was a Chinese actor and singer whose television credits included Go Princess Go, Eternal Love and The Legend of White Snake. He died after a fall in Beijing on September 11, 2025. His studio said police had ruled out criminal involvement; a later police account described the fall as accidental after drinking. Online speculation continued, but skepticism is not evidence of another explanation, and one widely shared video framed as a protest in China was found to be AI-generated.
Who was Yu Menglong?
Yu was born in Urumqi, Xinjiang, and entered the entertainment industry through the 2007 talent program My Show! My Style!, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA). He made his acting debut in the 2011 short film The Little Prince.
His television work included Go Princess Go (2015), Eternal Love (2017), The Legend of White Snake (2019), The Love Lasts Two Minds and The Moon Brightens for You (both 2020), Love Game in Eastern Fantasy (2024) and Feud (2025), according to AsiaOne’s September 11, 2025 report. CNA also lists Eternal Night Starry River among his credits.
What was reported about his death?
The accounts emerged in stages. They should be understood as statements attributed to particular sources, not as independent findings presented here.

- September 11, 2025 — studio announcement: Yu’s studio announced that he had died after a fall in Beijing and said police had ruled out criminal involvement. AsiaOne reported the studio’s wording.
- Several days later — statement attributed to his mother: CNA reported that a statement issued through Yu’s agency and attributed to his mother described him as having fallen to his death after consuming alcohol. It said police had concluded their investigation and asked the public to stop ungrounded speculation. CNA published an English rendering; the source does not independently authenticate the statement’s authorship.
- September 21–22, 2025 — police account: A bulletin issued by Chaoyang police on September 21 was summarized the next day by the China Internet Joint Rumor Refutation Platform in a post credited to Xinhua. It characterized Yu’s death as an accidental fall after drinking. CNA reported that the police account described examining the scene, conducting forensic examination, interviewing people and reviewing surveillance. CNA also reported police action in three cases involving false claims.
These are the studio’s announcement, a statement relayed by CNA as coming from Yu’s mother, and the authorities’ reported account. The sources cited here report those statements; they do not provide an independent examination of the underlying forensic evidence.
Why did the story become an online firestorm?
CNA reported on September 22, 2025, that rumors, deleted posts and public doubt continued after the studio announcement and the statement attributed to Yu’s mother. The persistence of questions helps explain the online attention, but neither skepticism nor deleted posts establish an alternative account of Yu’s death.

The scale figures reported later offer limited snapshots, not a measure of worldwide reach. In an October 28, 2025 fact-check, Agence France-Presse (AFP) said a TikTok clip falsely presented as a protest in China after Yu’s death had more than 430,000 views at the time of its report. AFP also reported that the hashtag #justiceforyumenglong had appeared in over 57,000 TikTok posts. Those are dated, platform-specific counts; they are not estimates of unique viewers, total posts across services or a global audience.

AFP found that a video shared as footage of a protest in China was AI-generated. Its fact-check cited a Sora watermark, distorted facial features and nonsensical characters. AFP found no evidence that the claimed large-scale rally had taken place in China.

That finding applies to the video and the claimed rally in China—not to every gathering anywhere. AFP separately reported that Yu’s fans organized rallies in the United States. The video’s false framing should not be used to dismiss other expressions of public concern, just as public concern should not be treated as proof of unverified claims about the death.
