The man was Dadabhai Naoroji, the pioneering Indian nationalist whose political work Gandhi credited with preparing the ground for the independence movement.

Why Gandhi praised Dadabhai Naoroji

In Hind Swaraj, Gandhi called Naoroji “the author of nationalism.” Gandhi also credited him with preparing the ground for later advocates of self-government: “Had not the Grand Old Man of India prepared the soil, our young men could not have even spoken about Home Rule,” as quoted in historian Dinyar Patel’s account for Scroll.in.

The phrase “Father of the Nation” in the headline refers to Gandhi’s description of Naoroji in this context; it is not an official title bestowed on Gandhi. The Government of India’s Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti says that no official government record or notification conferred that title on Gandhi. Its FAQ reports that Subhas Chandra Bose used the form of address for Gandhi in 1944. These are separate historical claims, not evidence of an official award.

Who Dadabhai Naoroji was

Naoroji (4 September 1825–30 June 1917) was born in Bombay to a Parsi family and became a professor at Elphinstone College. He was among the founders of the Indian National Congress and served as its president in 1886, 1893 and 1906, according to the Indian National Congress.

He also took his arguments into British politics. Elected to the House of Commons in 1892, he was the first Indian to serve as a British MP, according to the Press Information Bureau. His career thus joined organizing in India with advocacy in Britain.

How Naoroji connected economics and self-government

Naoroji challenged the economic consequences of British rule through what became known as the “drain of wealth” critique: he argued that colonial arrangements transferred resources out of India. The Press Information Bureau describes his sustained use of statistics to make that case. The point was not merely economic accounting; it helped frame colonial rule as a political system whose effects could be examined and challenged.

At the Congress session in Calcutta in 1906, Naoroji placed Swaraj—self-government—at the center of the Congress goal. The sources support his prominent articulation of self-government as a Congress platform, not a claim that he invented the word “Swaraj.” His economic critique and political demand worked together: arguments about how rule affected India strengthened the case that Indians should govern themselves.

Why his influence mattered to Gandhi

Naoroji’s significance was foundational rather than limited to one office or speech. He helped establish a national political organization, pressed India’s case in Parliament in Britain, and gave Congress a prominent platform for self-government. Gandhi’s praise in Hind Swaraj recognized that earlier groundwork as essential to the later generation’s ability to demand Home Rule. The online transcription at Gandhi Ashram Sevagram uses the phrase “the respected Dadabhai” and calls him “the author of nationalism.”
