Carol Burnett’s story was about actress Betty Grable. Burnett recalled that Grable drank Coca-Cola and burped repeatedly while she and Martha Raye were guests on The Carol Burnett Show.
What Carol Burnett remembered about Betty Grable
In a conversation with Amy Poehler on Good Hang, Burnett recalled being thrilled to meet Grable and Raye, performers she had watched growing up. She said Grable had a fondness for Coca-Cola and burped repeatedly during their visit. TheMix’s February 16, 2026 report says Burnett demonstrated the burps and described them as very loud. TheMix’s account of Burnett’s story and an Entertainment Weekly report syndicated by AOL both identify Grable.
The moment with Martha Raye
According to the reports, Grable and Raye were waiting in the wings before going on the show when Grable took another sip of Coca-Cola and burped. Burnett recalled Raye responding with a joke, and said she laughed so hard she thought she would die. The punchline is repeated in both reports, but the original recording was not available to confirm its exact wording; it is best understood as a line attributed to Raye in Burnett’s recollection.
What the anecdote does—and does not—establish
This is a humorous memory Burnett shared decades after the event, not independent documentation of Grable’s habits. The reports place the incident during Grable and Raye’s guest appearance on The Carol Burnett Show; they do not establish a medical explanation or support a broader claim about Grable.

TheMix dates The Carol Burnett Show to 1967–1978 and says Grable died in 1973, aged 56. Those details are secondary-source reporting, rather than essential evidence for the anecdote.
