Randy Orton was talking to Pat McAfee. WWE revealed McAfee as the caller on the April 3, 2026 episode of SmackDown, where he joined Orton in the storyline against Cody Rhodes ahead of WrestleMania 42.
When WWE revealed Randy Orton’s mystery caller
The reveal came on the April 3, 2026 episode of SmackDown in St. Louis. Sports Illustrated reported that Orton was discussing his pursuit of a 15th world championship and his upcoming match with Rhodes when McAfee appeared and attacked Rhodes. Sports Illustrated’s account of the reveal places the phone-call mystery in the run-up to WrestleMania 42.
What McAfee’s alliance with Orton meant in the storyline
In the segment, McAfee said Orton had called him because they disliked WWE’s direction. McAfee criticized current programming and cast Orton as the person who could change it, according to WrestleZone’s report. That was storyline motivation and character dialogue, not an independently established assessment of WWE.
McAfee’s on-screen promo included this complaint: “Why, when I turn on WWE TV, I have to watch two five-foot-five guys do a 45-minute Iron Man match for 10 weeks straight for no rhyme or reason, when Randy Orton is around?” The line reflects McAfee’s character’s opinion in the segment.

Who fans thought might be on the phone
Before WWE identified McAfee, the caller prompted speculation. Earlier coverage listed possible theories including “Cowboy” Bob Orton, The Rock, Ric Flair, Kevin Owens, and even the possibility that Orton was speaking to himself. These were guesses, not additional confirmed answers. Sports Illustrated’s preview captured the question fans were asking before the reveal.
