How did Brandon Blackstock die?

Blackstock died in August 2025 at age 48. In a statement to the Associated Press, a family representative said he had “bravely battled cancer for more than three years” and “passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family.” The Los Angeles Times later reported that Butte-Silver Bow County coroner Dan Hollis confirmed melanoma as the cause of death and natural causes as the manner.

Variety reported that a California labor commissioner ruled in November 2023 that Blackstock must repay $2.6 million in commissions on specified deals the ruling said should have been handled by a licensed talent agency. The deals identified in Variety’s account involved The Voice, Norwegian Cruise Line, Wayfair and the Billboard Music Awards. The ruling did not include The Kelly Clarkson Show.

Variety quoted the ruling: “Under the Talent Agencies Act (TAA), a manager, like any person without a talent agency license, cannot procure or attempt to procure employment for artists.” The remaining lawsuits were settled in 2024; the terms were not publicly disclosed in the cited reporting. The ruling’s scope should not be extended beyond the specified deals, and the settlement was not reported as an admission.
