How did Shyamala influence Kamala Harris?
Harris has credited her mother with shaping her approach to public life. In a 2024 Democratic National Convention speech, she recalled lessons including “never complain about injustice” and “do something about it,” as recounted by TIME’s coverage of the speech. TIME also reported that Gopalan raised Harris and her sister Maya largely on her own after her marriage ended, with support from a close community.
Another line Harris has often recalled captures her mother’s emphasis on opening doors for others: “Kamala, you may be the first to do many things, but make sure you’re not the last.” Georgia Public Broadcasting attributes the words to Gopalan as remembered by Harris; they are a recollection, not a contemporaneous recording. Georgia Public Broadcasting’s feature recounts the advice.
