C.S. Lewis was born in East Belfast on 29 November 1898. His Belfast story includes his birthplace at Dundela Villas, the family home at Little Lea, a brief period at Campbell College and his baptism at St Mark’s Church. The city also shaped memories of childhood beauty and longing that Lewis later described in his writing. That influence matters, but it does not establish that any one Belfast place was a direct model for Narnia.

Who was C.S. Lewis?

Clive Staples Lewis, known to family and friends as Jack, was a writer, literary scholar and Christian thinker. He became widely known for the Chronicles of Narnia and his Christian writing, as well as for his academic work. Much of his adult academic life was spent at Oxford and Cambridge.

Lewis’s own account of his birth appears in Surprised by Joy: “I was born in the winter of 1898 at Belfast, the son of a solicitor and of a clergyman’s daughter.” The date was 29 November 1898. That makes Belfast more than a later point of interest in his biography: it was where his early life began. In describing him as Belfast-born, it is clearest to use the historical place name and date rather than project later political boundaries onto the circumstances of his birth; a 2013 Northern Ireland Assembly debate described him as a child of pre-partitioned Ireland.

A 2013 Northern Ireland Assembly debate reported that HarperCollins attributed more than 100 million copies sold to Lewis’s books. That is a publisher figure as repeated in the debate, not a current sales total verified here. It offers a sense of the scale of his readership, but the Belfast connection is best understood through the particular places and childhood memories associated with him. The Assembly discussion also identified The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe among the works for which he is best known. Visit Belfast describes it as the first Narnia release, in 1950.

Where did Lewis live in Belfast?

Dundela Villas: his birthplace

Lewis was born at Dundela Villas in East Belfast, where his family lived until 1905. The original houses were demolished in 1953. The site is marked, but the house itself no longer survives as a visitor attraction. It is important to distinguish the historical birthplace from a surviving building: a marker can identify the place associated with Lewis without making the lost home available to tour.

The C.S. Lewis Institute’s account of the Dundela years describes a garden that became significant in Lewis’s memory. His older brother Warnie made a miniature garden using materials such as moss, leaves, twigs, petals and flowers. Lewis later called this “the first beauty I ever knew” and wrote that his imagination of Paradise would retain something of that toy garden. His recollection connects early experience with his later imagination; it does not show that Narnia is a direct reproduction of the garden.

This distinction is useful when considering the site’s significance. Dundela Villas matters first as the place of Lewis’s birth and early family life. The remembered garden adds a personal dimension: it helps explain how a small scene from childhood could remain vivid and acquire lasting imaginative meaning. It is not evidence that a visitor can identify a particular Narnia landscape in the former garden, or that Lewis designed a fictional setting from that spot.

Little Lea: the family’s later home

In 1905, the family moved to Little Lea on Circular Road. Lewis remembered its rooms and corridors, its attic and books, and the broad views from the house over Belfast Lough and the Antrim shore. Those details give a more textured picture of the setting in which his childhood imagination developed: not simply a city name on a biography, but a home and landscape he later recalled.

The house and its contents, as Lewis remembered them, suggest a child’s world of rooms to explore, books to read and views beyond the home. The C.S. Lewis Institute’s discussion of Little Lea draws attention to these features as part of the remembered setting. They provide context for his later reflections on imagination and longing, without requiring a claim that any single room, book or view produced a specific story or character.

Little Lea is a private residence, not a public museum. Its role in Lewis’s life can be discussed through his recollections and published accounts, but visitors should not treat it as an open attraction or approach the occupants expecting access. That is different from a visitor-facing exhibition or a building whose current tour arrangements have been confirmed. No current public opening hours or tours for the house are established here.

Which Belfast church and school were part of his life?

St Mark’s Church, Dundela

Lewis was baptized at St Mark’s Church, Dundela, in 1899. This is a distinct part of his Belfast biography: Dundela Villas was his birthplace, while St Mark’s was the church associated with his baptism. The church connection should not be confused with either of the family homes. It adds a religious and family milestone to the record of his early life, but the sources cited here do not establish current visitor arrangements.

Campbell College

Lewis attended Campbell College as a boarding student in 1910, but his time there was brief. He left after developing respiratory trouble. It was one episode in his education, not the setting for most of his later academic career, which was spent largely at Oxford and Cambridge. The distinction matters because a short school connection is different from a long-term adult academic post or a home where he spent his childhood.

How did Belfast influence Lewis’s imagination?

The clearest evidence is Lewis’s own recollection of particular childhood experiences: Warnie’s miniature garden, the family’s home and its surroundings, and the feeling of beauty and longing those memories carried for him. The garden became part of the way he later imagined Paradise. Little Lea’s rooms, attic, books and views over Belfast Lough and the Antrim shore also belong to the landscape he remembered.

These memories help explain why Belfast matters when considering Lewis’s imagination. They support a careful claim about formative experience and the sources of personal memory. They do not demonstrate a one-to-one relationship in which a Belfast garden, house or view can be identified as the model for Narnia. His later work grew from a wider imaginative and intellectual life, and the available biographical details do not justify reducing it to a single local inspiration.

It is possible to say both that Belfast was formative and that the evidence does not support a simple origin story. Lewis explicitly remembered the garden as an early experience of beauty, and recalled the house and outlook at Little Lea. Those are meaningful links between place and imagination. They are different from proof that a particular Belfast site corresponds to a location in the Narnia books.

Lewis’s connection to Ulster also appears in a remark attributed to him in the Northern Ireland Assembly’s 2013 record: “Heaven is Oxford lifted and placed in the middle of County Down.” The Assembly speaker relayed it through Ulster student David Bleakley, so it is a mediated attribution rather than a quotation independently verified here against a primary Lewis text. It conveys a remembered attachment to the wider region, but should be presented with that qualification. It is also about County Down, not a description of a Belfast address or a claim that the city itself inspired Narnia.

How to understand the Belfast sites

Place Connection to Lewis What remains or access
Dundela Villas, East Belfast Birthplace; family home until 1905 The original houses were demolished in 1953; the site is marked.
Little Lea, Circular Road Family home from 1905; remembered in Lewis’s accounts of childhood Private residence; not a public museum.
St Mark’s Church, Dundela Lewis was baptized there in 1899 The cited accounts establish the historical connection, but do not establish current visitor arrangements.
Campbell College Lewis attended briefly as a boarding student in 1910 The cited accounts do not establish current visitor arrangements.

The sites represent different kinds of connection: birth and residence, religious history, and schooling. They should not be treated as interchangeable stops or assumed to have the same public access. The family’s two addresses are particularly easy to conflate: Dundela Villas was the birthplace and home until 1905; Little Lea was the later family home. The original Dundela houses have gone, while Little Lea remains a private home.

If comparing places for a visit, consider what the connection is, whether the original building survives, whether access is public, and whether the place is a private residence or a visitor-facing site. A marked historic site is not necessarily an attraction with indoor access. Similarly, evidence that Lewis attended a school or was baptized at a church does not by itself establish that either currently offers tours. Current opening hours, tours and visitor arrangements are not established by the sources cited here; check directly with any venue before planning a visit.

Why Belfast remains part of his story

Lewis’s later fame can make his childhood seem like a preface to Narnia alone. The Belfast record is more specific than that. It locates his birth, identifies two successive homes, records his baptism and brief attendance at Campbell College, and preserves Lewis’s recollections of a garden, a house and a landscape. These facts explain why Belfast belongs in accounts of his life without turning biographical association into an unsupported claim about the origin of a particular fictional world.

The association also appears in later public discussion of Lewis in Northern Ireland. In the 2013 Assembly debate, sculptor Ross Wilson described his statue The Searcher by saying: “C.S. Lewis did not just hang clothes in a wardrobe, he hung ideas — great ideas of sacrifice, redemption, victory, and freedom for the Sons of Adam and the Daughters of Eve”. This is Wilson’s interpretation of Lewis’s work, as quoted in the Assembly record, not a statement by Lewis. It illustrates the way the Narnia wardrobe and its themes have been used to discuss his wider literary and Christian legacy; it does not add evidence that a Belfast place was the direct source of those ideas.

For a broader account of Belfast’s literary history, Visit Belfast’s overview places Lewis among writers connected with the city. For the details of Little Lea and Dundela Villas, the C.S. Lewis Institute account of Little Lea and its account of Dundela Villas draw on Lewis’s remembered childhood. The 2013 Assembly record provides context for how his life and writing have been discussed in Northern Ireland, including the qualified County Down quotation, Wilson’s description of The Searcher and the reported publisher sales figure: Northern Ireland Assembly Official Report, 19 November 2013.

Did Belfast inspire Narnia?

Lewis’s recollections connect Belfast childhood experiences, especially Warnie’s miniature garden, with his later sense of beauty and longing. The evidence supports formative influence, not a direct one-to-one claim that a Belfast place was the model for Narnia.

What was C.S. Lewis’s connection to Campbell College and St Mark’s Church?

He attended Campbell College briefly as a boarding student in 1910 and left after developing respiratory trouble. He was baptized at St Mark’s Church, Dundela, in 1899. These were separate parts of his early biography.

The Bottom Line

C.S. Lewis’s Belfast connection is both biographical and imaginative: he was born at Dundela Villas in 1898, later lived at Little Lea, was baptized at St Mark’s and briefly attended Campbell College. His memories of Belfast gardens, rooms and views informed his sense of beauty and longing, but do not prove that a specific local site became a Narnia setting.
