Silvio Rodríguez, the Cuban singer-songwriter, said “Las revoluciones no son perfectas, son necesarias” in an October 2025 interview with Rolling Stone en Español. The line comes in a discussion about whether people can become victims of their leaders, including during revolutions; the surrounding exchange makes clear he is arguing that revolutions and political systems are imperfect, not claiming that their failures do not matter.
Where the quote appeared
The statement appears in an interview by Diego Ortiz for Rolling Stone en Español, titled “Silvio Rodríguez: ‘Las revoluciones no son perfectas, son necesarias’.” The interview was published in October 2025. Contemporaneous coverage by 14ymedio reported on October 22, 2025, that the conversation had appeared the preceding Tuesday, October 21. Its broader focus included Rodríguez’s music, poetic influences and the Nueva Trova, alongside politics; the interview should not be reduced to the single political exchange. “Las revoluciones no son perfectas, son necesarias. Quienes las hacen son seres humanos como tú y como yo, que no son perfectos, entonces, en una zona de la revolución, tú ves que ocurren maravillas y en otra están haciendo disparates”.
In English: “Revolutions are not perfect; they are necessary. The people who make them are human beings like you and me, who are not perfect, so in one area of the revolution you see wonders happening and in another they are doing foolish things.” This is a translation; the Spanish above is the wording in the interview.

His answer links a revolution’s mixed outcomes to the imperfections of the people who make it: he says one part may produce “maravillas” while another produces “disparates.” He then widens the argument beyond revolutions, saying no government or political system is perfect and that each country should try to find a course suited to its own conditions. These are Rodríguez’s political views as expressed in the interview, not an independent assessment of Cuba, Venezuela, capitalism or socialism.

The headline compresses a longer answer into a memorable contrast: revolutions are necessary, in Rodríguez’s view, but neither their participants nor their results are flawless. The qualification matters. He acknowledges serious mistakes as well as achievements; the line is not a claim that every action taken in the name of a revolution is justified.

14ymedio characterized the remarks as a defense of Rodríguez’s continued belief in the Cuban Revolution while recognizing its flaws. Rodríguez also addressed his own outlook later in the interview: “Desilusionado de la revolución nunca me he sentido, jamás. Desilusionado de alguna gente, sí, por supuesto” (“I have never felt disillusioned with the revolution, never. Disillusioned with some people, yes, of course”). That distinction is his stated position, rather than a neutral verdict on the revolution.
