Before Seven made its decision public, a 29 May report described Dr Chris Brown and Shirvington as being “in running to replace David Koch as presenter.” That was speculation, not an official shortlist: Seven announced Shirvington on 5 June, and he began alongside Natalie Barr on 12 June.
Who was reported to be in running to replace David Koch?
A report published on 29 May 2023 named Dr Chris Brown and Matt Shirvington as possible successors to Koch. Its wording reflected speculation about who might take the role; it did not establish that Seven had formally shortlisted either person.
The question followed Koch’s announcement that he was leaving Sunrise after 21 years as co-host. Seven said his final edition would be Friday, 9 June 2023. The network also said a successor had been appointed but would not be announced until 5 June.
Who did Seven appoint?
Seven announced Matt Shirvington as Koch’s successor on 5 June 2023. The network said he would co-host with Natalie Barr and officially start on 12 June. Seven West Media’s later release, dated 4 December 2023, confirmed that Barr and Shirvington were hosting the program and that Shirvington had taken over from Koch on 12 June.

In Seven’s announcement, Seven West Media Managing Director and CEO James Warburton said: “I’m delighted to welcome Matt to his new role co-hosting Sunrise with Nat.” Koch described Shirvington as someone who had been part of the Sunrise team and had filled in for him, calling him “the perfect fit to shift into my chair on a permanent basis.”

What the 2023 reports do—and do not—establish
The contemporaneous coverage and Seven’s dated announcement establish the story’s outcome: Shirvington, not Brown, was appointed to replace Koch. They confirm the 2023 handover, but do not establish who presents Sunrise as of 8 October 2026. The 2023 lineup should therefore be read as historical, not as a statement of the program’s current presenters.
