Nick Cannon’s parents, James Cannon and Beth Gardner, were teenagers when he was born and did not raise him together as a couple. His mother cared for him in California, his paternal grandparents helped, and he later moved to North Carolina to live with his father. Reliable sources do not establish where either parent lives or what they do today.
Who are Nick Cannon’s parents?
Nick Cannon’s parents are James Cannon and Beth Gardner. The Los Angeles Times reported in 2023 that they were high-school-aged when they had him and never lived together as a couple.
That history does not mean both parents were absent. The Times describes a childhood in which care shifted among family members: Beth stayed with Nick in San Diego while finishing school and working, and his paternal grandparents helped look after him. James, after a period involved with a San Diego street gang and finding religion while in jail, moved to North Carolina and became a minister.

His mother and paternal grandparents in California
Nick spent his early years with his mother in San Diego’s Bay Vista Housing Projects. His paternal grandparents helped care for him during that time, according to the Los Angeles Times account.

What has Nick Cannon said about his father and grandfather?
In a 2019 HipHopDX interview, Cannon described the different influence each man had on him: “It most definitely came from my father and my grandfather. They’re strong alpha-type males. My father was in the world of ministry, and my grandfather was a tough, in the streets, type of guy.” He said his father was not always around, but that his presence when they were together helped shape his confidence.
Cannon also recalled that his early work let him help his family financially, saying he could buy food and clothes and “pay my mom’s rent.” Those are his recollections from the interview, rather than an independent account of the family’s finances.
