The Universal/Lexus release additionally lists Holzman and Dana Fox. The lists differ in scope, so the additional names are best attributed to that release rather than treated as a single uniform credit list.
How the film connects to the novel and Broadway musical
The story began with Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Winnie Holzman wrote the book for the Broadway musical, and Stephen Schwartz wrote its music and lyrics. The musical premiered in 2003, before the story reached the screen.

For the film, the screenplay is credited to Holzman and to Holzman and Dana Fox, as presented in Universal’s materials. Holzman and Schwartz therefore connect the film’s creative team to the stage musical in different roles: Holzman as a writer on both adaptations, and Schwartz as the musical’s composer and lyricist as well as an executive producer of the film.
Universal described the 2024 film as the first chapter of a two-part adaptation, with the second part scheduled for 2025. Those were the announced schedule dates at the time, not current release guidance. Producer Marc Platt described the opportunity to expand the story beyond the stage: “The film, Platt says, allows them to expand and explore the Wicked universe in a way that isn’t possible on stage.”

The producer credits answer who led the film’s production: Platt and Stone. Executive-producer credits recognize a different set of contributors and should not be substituted for the producer listing. The official materials also place the film within a broader creative lineage—Maguire’s novel, Holzman and Schwartz’s musical, and the film screenplay credited to Holzman and Fox—rather than suggesting that the producers alone wrote the story.
Universal’s 2024 guide gives the stage musical more than $6 billion in global receipts, an audience of 65 million people, and a reach of more than 100 cities in 16 countries. These are figures attributed to NBCUniversal about the stage musical, not the film’s box office or independently audited totals. The same guide says the film’s promotional campaign involved more than 400 brand partners; that is a corporate-reported campaign figure, not a measure of film sales.
