The assignments are reported in the Associated Press recap. The tribute was a prominent, emotional moment in the broadcast. CMT’s announcement also named Lukas Nelson and Roger Clemens for special appearances; the announcement did not specify a song for either.
When and where was the tribute?
The tribute took place during the 2024 CMT Music Awards on April 7 at Austin’s Moody Center. Kelsea Ballerini hosted the ceremony. CMT and Paramount announced the lineup on April 4, three days before the show.
How could viewers watch it?
At the time, the awards were scheduled to air live on CBS and stream live and on demand on Paramount+. CMT also announced a separate one-hour Toby Keith tribute special for April 11, 2024. These were the original broadcast plans; the announcement does not establish whether either program is currently available, or whether access varies by region.

CMT’s announcement described Keith’s career as spanning more than 40 million albums sold worldwide, 61 Billboard Hot Country Songs chart singles, 32 No. 1 hits and 42 additional top-10 songs. The release also noted Keith’s posthumous 2024 Country Music Hall of Fame induction and his receipt of the National Medal of Arts in 2021.
