Nick Pauley performed the suited “Dancepool” routine in Deadpool & Wolverine; Ryan Reynolds did not. The sequence draws on the iconic *NSYNC “Bye Bye Bye” choreography created by Darrin Henson, while Method Studios’ John Likens proposed the film’s dance concept and used motion capture to pitch it.
Who does the “Bye Bye Bye” dance in Deadpool & Wolverine?
Nick Pauley is the dancer inside the Deadpool suit in the film’s opening sequence, where the character fights to *NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye.” Pauley’s performance brought the dance to the screen as Dancepool; Ryan Reynolds plays Deadpool but was not the suited dancer for this routine. Forbes reported Pauley’s role.
Who choreographed the original “Bye Bye Bye” dance?
Darrin Henson created the original choreography for *NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye.” The film sequence draws on that recognizable dance vocabulary, but the distinction in credits matters: Henson choreographed the original routine, and Pauley performed the suited film version. Henson described seeing the routine return to prominence as “a spectrum of emotional colors, as you can imagine.” Forbes.
How did the Dancepool scene come together?
John Likens pitched a dance inside the fight
Method Studios executive creative director John Likens said the fight was being cut to “Bye Bye Bye,” which led him to propose that Deadpool knowingly break into the song’s dance moves while fighting. Likens taught himself the routine, performed it in a motion-capture suit, and used the resulting data to make a previs animation and develop a music-video-style camera treatment. Director Shawn Levy, quoted by Likens, responded: “It’s a one in a million idea and you nailed it!” Method Studios’ account.

Pauley performed in costume against blue screen
After the concept was pitched with the previs, the team hired choreographer and dancer Nick Pauley to perform in the Deadpool suit against blue screen. The performance was then composited into the sequence’s stylized environment. Likens described the initial idea this way: “I felt strongly that if Deadpool consciously knows this fight scene is being cut to Bye Bye Bye, he might just feel inclined to bust out some of the iconic NSYNC dance moves while killing off the bad guys.” Method Studios.
Why are the opening credits part of the action?
The sequence is designed as both a fight and a self-aware title sequence. Method Studios says the opening credits interact with the choreography: bodies strike or kick through the typography as the action unfolds. That visual device extends the scene’s joke beyond Deadpool’s dance, making the credits part of the set piece rather than a separate overlay. Method Studios.
