Who owns Pokémon GO now?
Scopely is the owner of Pokémon GO. The deal covered Niantic’s games business, not every part of Niantic. According to Scopely’s acquisition announcement, the portfolio included Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, Monster Hunter Now, Campfire, Wayfarer, and the Niantic games team.
Scopely announced the agreement on March 12, 2025, at a stated value of $3.5 billion. It later updated that announcement to report that the transaction closed on May 29, 2025. The announcement date and closing date mark different stages: the first was the deal’s public announcement; the second was its completion.
What happened to Niantic?
Niantic’s games business went to Scopely, while Niantic’s technology platform was spun off as Niantic Spatial. Scopely said Niantic Spatial would continue to own and operate Ingress Prime and Peridot. So “Scopely bought Niantic” is too broad: the transaction was for the games business, and Niantic Spatial remained separate.

What did the companies say about Pokémon GO’s future?
Scopely said the Niantic game teams would continue working on their roadmaps under long-time leaders, with Scopely providing resources and support. That describes the company’s stated plan; it is not a guarantee that the game’s features, staffing, monetization, or future decisions would never change. In the announcement, Niantic founder and CEO John Hanke called the partnership a way to provide the games with long-term support and investment.
In a 2026 anniversary update, Ed Wu, identified as President, Games at Scopely, said the company’s commitment was to keep evolving Pokémon GO around discovery and connection. That is also a company statement about its intentions, rather than evidence that every aspect of the game will stay the same.

Is the Pokémon GO team still the same?
In a 2026 update, the official Pokémon GO site said the Niantic games team had officially changed its name to Scopely Explore and that the Pokémon GO team remained the same. This is the team’s public description of continuity; it does not establish that every role, reporting line, or decision-making process is unchanged.
What player figures did Scopely report?
Scopely’s figures describe different measures at different times, so they should not be read as one consistent trend. In its 2025 acquisition announcement, the company reported more than 100 million unique players in 2024, over 20 million weekly active players, two million Pokémon GO Fest tickets sold in 2024, 40 minutes of average daily playtime, and a presence in over 190 countries and regions. In its 2026 anniversary announcement, Scopely reported more than $1 billion in revenue in 2025, more than 800 million players inspired to explore since launch, a presence in 150-plus countries and regions, and 45 minutes of average daily playtime. These are company-published figures; the announcements do not establish that differences between the country or playtime figures reflect a directly comparable measurement over time.

Why does the headline say “almost 9 years”?
That wording refers to the March 2025 announcement: Pokémon GO launched in July 2016, so the game was approaching its ninth anniversary when the deal was announced. It is no longer a current age description. Pokémon GO celebrated its tenth anniversary in July 2026.
