The FBI concluded that Brian Laundrie was the only person directly involved in Gabby Petito’s death. That is an investigative finding, not a court verdict: Laundrie died before he could be tried. The FBI also reported that a notebook found with his remains contained statements claiming responsibility.
Who killed Gabby Petito?
In its final investigative update, the FBI said it had not identified anyone besides Laundrie as directly involved in Petito’s death. Michael Schneider, then the FBI Denver Division’s special agent in charge, said: “The investigation did not identify any other individuals other than Brian Laundrie directly involved in the tragic death of Gabby Petito.” The FBI issued that update on January 21, 2022.
The FBI said investigators found a notebook with Laundrie’s remains containing statements in which he claimed responsibility. The agency also reported that the medical examiner concluded Laundrie died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Because Laundrie died before a trial, no court tried or convicted him in Petito’s killing; the conclusion about his direct involvement is the FBI’s finding.
What happened during the trip?
Petito and Laundrie were engaged and traveling across the country in 2021. Petito intended to document the journey and pursue a career making vanlife videos. Netflix’s retrospective timeline dates the trip’s start to July 2, 2021. Netflix’s timeline of events provides a public chronology, while the FBI’s final update records the investigation’s conclusions.

The August 12 Moab police stop
On August 12, witnesses reported a domestic-violence incident involving the couple in Moab, Utah. Police stopped them and arranged for them to spend the night apart, according to Netflix’s timeline. The City of Moab later summarized an independent law-enforcement review conducted after a formal complaint. The City said the review found several unintentional mistakes by responding officers, including a failure to cite Petito for domestic violence; it also noted that a statement from the original 911 caller had not been obtained. Moab’s public summary describes recommendations for additional domestic-violence and legal training, policy and software reviews, and stronger review of incident reports.
The City said it intended to implement the recommendations. The review’s stated findings concern the police response to the August 12 incident; they do not establish that a different response would have prevented Petito’s later death.

These dates help orient the timeline; the FBI’s final update is the source for the agency’s investigative conclusion.
Laundrie’s remains and the FBI update
On October 20, 2021, after water receded in the search area, investigators found Laundrie’s remains along with a backpack, notebook, and revolver, the FBI reported. What the Moab review does—and does not—say
The review is relevant context for the case, but its findings should not be turned into a claim about what would have happened under a different police response. Moab’s summary identifies errors and recommends changes to training, policy, software, and incident-report review. It does not say those changes would have prevented the homicide, nor does the summary establish that the officers caused it.
A later Utah policy debate also drew on intimate-partner-violence concerns. In a January 31, 2023 Associated Press report, Utah Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson said 22% of homicides in Utah were intimate-partner-related. The same AP story described a Utah proposal for officers to ask 11 questions in an intimate-partner-violence screening protocol. Those are figures and a proposal reported in that dated Utah policy context—not current national statistics or a finding about Petito’s individual case. Read the Associated Press report.

How the case has been retold
Netflix identifies American Murder: Gabby Petito as a three-episode docuseries and publishes a timeline alongside its coverage. A documentary’s retrospective account can help viewers follow events, but the FBI update is the primary source here for what investigators concluded, and Moab’s city summary is the source for the municipal review’s stated findings. Streaming availability may vary by region and over time.
