She is not a living participant in the film’s present-day action; her memory, Bond’s grief and the guilt he has not resolved shape the scene.
Who Is Vesper Lynd in No Time To Die?
Vesper is part of the Daniel Craig Bond story through Bond’s memories of their relationship and its consequences. In Casino Royale, she and Bond fall in love, but she betrays him and dies in a sinking building in Venice after Bond tries to save her. Before her death, she leaves behind a phone containing a clue that helps him investigate QUANTUM. The official James Bond character biography recounts her role and fate.
What happens at Vesper’s tomb?
In No Time To Die, Bond visits Vesper’s tomb in Matera. He tells her, “I miss you,” and burns a note marked “Forgive Me.” The tomb explodes, and Bond suspects Madeleine Swann has set him up. He sends Madeleine away. The official film page and the official account of the film describe the scene and its place in the story.
Why does Vesper still matter to Bond?
Vesper’s death is a turning point in Bond’s emotional life, and the tomb scene brings his unresolved grief and guilt into the events of No Time To Die. The film’s immediate plot links the explosion to Bond’s suspicion of Madeleine; reading the note and visit as an attempt to seek forgiveness is an interpretation of the scene, rather than a separate explanation stated by the film’s official summaries.

Vesper also remains a reference point for Bond’s later relationships. In an official Spectre retrospective, co-producer Barbara Broccoli described what Madeleine means to him: “For the first time since Vesper Lynd, he sees the possibility of another life.” The retrospective places her remark within Bond’s emotional arc.
