Tony Shalhoub is married to actress Brooke Adams. The two met while working on Broadway in Wendy Wasserstein’s The Heidi Chronicles, and they married in 1992. Adams has her own long career in film and theatre, and she has appeared in Monk, the series that made her husband a household name.
How they met
Adams and Shalhoub were both in the cast of The Heidi Chronicles on Broadway. USA Insider’s updated biography of Adams dates their meeting to 1990. In a 2014 interview with American Theatre, Adams described the production as the place where they met, and said that working together has kept their romance alive:
“It’s how we met, doing The Heidi Chronicles on Broadway. It revives our romance when we work together.”
Their marriage
USA Insider and other published biographies give 1992 as the year they married. In a 2020 joint interview with Martha’s Vineyard Arts & Ideas, the couple confirmed the wedding took place in April but did not repeat the year in that passage. Shalhoub gave the age context when describing the wedding:

“When we got married, I was 38 and Brooke had just turned 43.”
Their daughters
The couple has two daughters, Josie and Sophie, who are both named in Associated Press coverage of the family’s 2025 travels. Adams has described the family’s history in a MUBI Notebook interview:

“I adopted Josie when I was single, then I met Tony [Shalhoub, in 1990] and we got married when [Josie] was three, and we adopted another girl together.”
Sources disagree on the year Adams adopted Josie. USA Insider gives 1989 and other published summaries give 1988, so this article does not state a year. USA Insider dates the second adoption to 1994. The couple’s interview confirms that they adopted the second daughter together but does not give a calendar year for it.

Brooke Adams’s career
Adams is an established actor, and her representative’s biography also describes her as a painter. Her credits span film, theatre and television:
| Category | Credits | Where the credit is documented |
|---|---|---|
| Film | Days of Heaven; Invasion of the Body Snatchers; The Dead Zone; Tell Me a Riddle; Gas Food and Lodging; Made-Up | Representative’s biography |
| Stage | The Heidi Chronicles; Lend Me a Tenor; Happy Days | Representative’s biography; American Theatre, 2014 |
| Television | Monk (five episodes, each playing a different role) | The network’s account of the series |
The representative’s biography and the American Theatre interview cover her career in the reader’s terms. Role names, release years and production details for individual credits are not stated in these sources, so this article does not supply them.

Her work on Monk
Adams appeared in five episodes of Monk, the series led by Shalhoub, playing different characters across the run. The network’s account also says she appeared in the opening scene of Mr. Monk’s Last Case. Her presence in the show is one of the few places where the couple’s professional and family lives overlap on screen.
