Grossman is a supporting cameo who represents the studio’s business interests behind the film-within-the-film—not one of the actors lost in the jungle. Cruise helped bring the character into the story, but Ben Stiller and Justin Theroux wrote the scenes.
What does Les Grossman do in Tropic Thunder?
Tropic Thunder follows actors making an expensive war movie whose production is moved into a Southeast Asian jungle. When they encounter real danger, they mistake it for part of the film. Grossman is the Hollywood mogul on the studio side of that production, embodying the commercial pressures behind the project. The film’s official Amblin page describes Cruise’s appearance as a cameo and identifies Grossman as a Hollywood mogul.

He is not the story’s central on-set character. His scenes bring the studio’s real-world concerns into a comedy otherwise focused on actors and a production spiraling out of control.
How did Cruise become Les Grossman?
Grossman was not a role Cruise had been offered from the outset. In a 2008 interview, Stiller said Cruise had read an earlier draft before Grossman existed. The two were discussing whether Cruise might play the agent role later given to Matthew McConaughey when Cruise pointed out that the story lacked a studio head. Stiller and co-writer Justin Theroux then wrote scenes for the character.

Stiller distinguished Cruise’s suggestion and commitment to developing Grossman from the actual writing: he said Cruise did not write the scenes. A later production oral history recounts the same broad sequence: the studio executive added another source of conflict and helped the film return to the real world beyond the jungle. When Stiller later offered Cruise the remaining Grossman part, Cruise agreed to play it.
These accounts are reported in a 2008 interview with Stiller and a retrospective production oral history.

Was Les Grossman based on Sumner Redstone or another executive?
No specific real-life model is established in the cited production accounts. Stiller directly rejected the claim that Grossman was a dig at Sumner Redstone, as well as the broader suggestion that the character was based on another particular studio mogul. The character satirizes Hollywood’s studio power and commercial pressures, but naming one executive as his source goes beyond what Stiller said.
Stiller’s denial appeared in the 2008 interview; a separate interview with Stiller also addresses the claim.

How did Cruise create Grossman’s look and dance?
The transformation involved more than a costume. Stiller said Cruise wanted Grossman to have unusually large hands and recalled four makeup tests; Stiller initially favored making the character bald. Cruise later recalled repeatedly asking for “fat hands” during makeup testing. That exchange is described in a 2008 interview and a 2026 BFI Sight and Sound interview.
The production oral history describes silicone prosthetics for Cruise’s head, neck, chest and hands, along with a padded body suit that gave Grossman a larger shape. Production participants also recalled that Cruise proposed having Grossman dance while in costume and choreographed the moves; Stiller found the performance funny. These choices helped make Grossman’s appearance and brief performance sharply distinct from Cruise’s familiar screen image.
