The reveal connects the film’s story to a familiar Oz character, but it belongs to Wicked’s adaptation—not a definitive explanation of every version of The Wizard of Oz.
Who is the Scarecrow in Wicked: For Good?
He is Fiyero, the prince whose story is intertwined with Elphaba and Glinda. Universal’s official synopsis identifies him as Prince Fiyero, played by Jonathan Bailey, and says the story’s aftershocks transform him. A film-specific account from Forbes identifies the transformed figure as the Scarecrow.
How does Fiyero become the Scarecrow?
Fiyero is in danger from the Wizard’s guards. Elphaba tries to protect him with magic, and the spell changes him into the Scarecrow. The available plot descriptions establish the purpose and outcome of the spell, but not precise mechanics beyond that; there is no need to infer a more detailed magical process.
Why does Elphaba turn Fiyero into the Scarecrow?
It is an attempted rescue: Elphaba acts to protect Fiyero when he is threatened. The transformation gives the familiar Oz figure a personal history rooted in the relationship and events at the center of Wicked, rather than presenting him only as a scarecrow who comes to life.

How can Fiyero be the Scarecrow if Dorothy meets him?
The film places Fiyero’s story alongside the Oz story viewers may already know. Its official synopsis says a girl from Kansas arrives, while Forbes describes Fiyero as becoming Dorothy’s companion. That creates an apparent continuity puzzle: the Scarecrow is both a figure associated with Dorothy’s journey and a person with a history tied to Elphaba.
The useful distinction is between versions. Wicked: For Good is based on the stage musical, which is based on Gregory Maguire’s novel; it is not presented as a continuity repair that must account for every event in L. Frank Baum’s books or the 1939 film. The movie’s adaptation lineage and credits are set out on the official film site. Forbes discusses the resulting continuity questions as commentary, not as an official statement of creator intent.

Is Fiyero the Scarecrow in the book too?
The film’s official materials establish its adaptation lineage, and the film-specific account identifies Fiyero as the Scarecrow. Those sources do not establish the details of how the novel handles the reveal, so the film’s plot should not be treated as proof of every book detail. Likewise, neither the film synopsis nor the cited commentary makes Wicked a canonical explanation of all versions of Oz.

The cited plot descriptions do not establish what the Scarecrow remembers at every point. His transformation and connection to Fiyero do not, by themselves, settle what he knows or when he knows it; a more specific answer would require evidence from the film or an authoritative script.
