The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences identifies Liza Minnelli as the only Oscar winner whose parents both received Oscars. The family’s awards were not all the same kind: her mother, Judy Garland, received an honorary miniature Oscar, while her father, Vincente Minnelli, won Best Director and Liza won Best Actress.
Why Liza Minnelli is the Academy’s answer
The Academy’s Oscar trivia document names Liza Minnelli as “the only Oscar winner with parents who both received Oscars.” It lists Judy Garland’s honorary miniature award, Vincente Minnelli’s directing win, and Liza Minnelli’s acting win. That wording is the Academy’s official trivia claim; it does not mean all three family members won competitive categories.
Three Oscars, with an important distinction
| Family member | Award | What it recognizes |
|---|---|---|
| Judy Garland | Honorary miniature Oscar, received in 1939 | An honorary award, not a competitive acting-category win |
| Vincente Minnelli | Best Director for Gigi | Competitive directing award; the Academy lists the win on its 1959 ceremony record |
| Liza Minnelli | Best Actress for Cabaret | Competitive acting award; the Academy lists the win on its 1973 ceremony record |
The Academy’s Oscar trivia document groups these awards under the broad phrase “received Oscars.” Garland’s honorary recognition differs from the competitive Best Director and Best Actress awards received by Vincente and Liza Minnelli.
Why Cabaret is associated with two different years
Liza Minnelli won for Cabaret, a film released in 1972. The award was presented at the 1973 ceremony, which honored films released in 1972. So “Best Actress in 1972” refers to the film year in the Academy trivia wording, while the ceremony record places the presentation in 1973.

What the claim does—and does not—establish
The Academy’s own trivia calls Minnelli the only Oscar winner whose parents both received Oscars. The claim rests on the Academy’s inclusive wording: a parent’s honorary Oscar counts as having “received” an Oscar, even though it is not a competitive category win. The three family records are therefore connected by the award, but differ in type, category, and year convention.
