The Rings of Power has not yet revealed the identity of Ciarán Hinds’s mysterious Dark Wizard. The character is a powerful figure tied to Rhûn and the Stranger’s story, and the Blue Wizards are a plausible Tolkien-lore theory—not a confirmed answer. The showrunners say viewers will learn more in season 3, whose first four episodes are scheduled to arrive on Prime Video on November 11, 2026.
Who is the Dark Wizard in The Rings of Power?
The Dark Wizard is the name Amazon uses for Ciarán Hinds’s secretive, powerful character. Introduced in season 2, he operates in Rhûn and has acolytes who obey him. The story connects him to the Stranger: he sends acolytes after the Stranger, believing he may be Sauron reborn. Amazon’s season 3 announcement still identifies Hinds’s role only as “the Dark Wizard.” Amazon’s season 2 announcement and its season 3 announcement do not disclose his personal name or nature.
Has the show confirmed his identity?
No. The character’s identity remains unresolved in the cited official material. In a July 2026 report, co-showrunner J.D. Payne confirmed the reveal is planned for season 3, answering “We are!” when asked whether viewers would learn who the Dark Wizard is. Co-showrunner Patrick McKay added, “You’ll find out, and you might find out sooner than you think.” The report does not name the character or specify an episode. GamesRadar+ reported the interview in July 2026.
Could he be one of the Blue Wizards?
It is a theory, not a confirmed identification. Tolkien named two Blue Wizards, Alatar and Pallando, whose stories are less developed in familiar published narratives than those of the better-known Istari. Their mission in the East provides a reason viewers might connect them to a wizard whose story unfolds in Rhûn. But the show has not identified Hinds’s character as either one, and the season 3 announcement does not confirm the connection.

Why Tolkien’s accounts invite speculation
Tolkien’s writings offer different treatments of the Blue Wizards’ eastern mission. An earlier account suggests they failed in the East and may have founded cults. A later version gives them an earlier Second Age mission intended to weaken Sauron’s influence. Material associated with the later account appears in The Peoples of Middle-earth. These variations give the adaptation room to draw on eastern-wizard lore, but they do not establish which version—or which identity—the show will use.
What the story says about the Dark Wizard’s motives
The character also fits a recurring Tolkien theme: powerful beings can be tempted into evil while believing they are serving a greater good. Co-showrunner Patrick McKay has described that pattern in discussing the series: “We have seen throughout Tolkien that powerful beings are tempted to evil.” He points to Saruman’s turn as an example of a character who believes, through twisted reasoning, that evil is the best way to save the world. That thematic framing helps explain the character’s place in the story, but it does not reveal his identity.

When will season 3 reveal more?
Amazon schedules the first four episodes of season 3 to premiere exclusively on Prime Video on November 11, 2026. The announcement says the premiere will be available in more than 240 countries and territories; that figure describes distribution reach, not audience size. The season’s story is set several years after season 2, as the races of Middle-earth try to prevent Sauron from dominating them. Because the episodes are still forthcoming as of October 8, 2026, the promised identity reveal has not yet appeared in the cited material.
