During the show’s 50th anniversary special, Adam Sandler jokingly named him as the person who would take over from creator Lorne Michaels. It was a punch line in a tribute song, not an announcement of a successor.
Who is Speedy on Saturday Night Live?
Entertainment Weekly identified Speedy as Speedy Rosenthal, a music technician who has worked at SNL since 1975, according to its February 2025 report. He is a behind-the-scenes crew member, not a cast member or a public-facing executive in the cited coverage.
In a 2017 interview with Parade, SNL production designer Eugene Lee described his work this way: “Speedy was the original hippie who moved the instruments and set up the music of the people performing. He’s still there!” That account gives the joke its context: Sandler was singling out a familiar, longstanding member of the show’s crew.
What was Adam Sandler’s joke?
In a song at the 50th anniversary special, Sandler reflected on viewers wondering who would take over when Michaels retires, then delivered the punch line that “the answer is of course Speedy.” The coverage reports that the camera cut to Rosenthal after the line. The moment was a comic tribute, not evidence that Rosenthal had been appointed to lead the show.

Sandler himself had been an SNL cast member from 1991 to 1995, Entertainment Weekly reported. His years on the show overlapped with Rosenthal’s reported tenure.
Was Speedy actually named Lorne Michaels’s successor?
No. The available account describes a joke in a celebratory song, not a formal succession announcement. The retirement context should also be read as historical rather than as a current update: Entertainment Weekly reported that Michaels said in a 2021 CBS Mornings interview he expected to stay through the 50th anniversary, and later told The Hollywood Reporter there was “no immediate plan” to leave. Those reported remarks do not establish his present plans or identify a successor.
