Sachi Parker is the professional name of actress and memoirist Stephanie Parker, the only child of actress Shirley MacLaine and producer Steve Parker. She has worked in film, television and theater, and her 2013 memoir, Lucky Me, recounts her childhood and relationship with her mother. MacLaine publicly disputed the book’s claims, and the accounts of their family history remain competing personal recollections rather than independently established findings.

Who is Sachi Parker?

Penguin Random House identifies Sachi Parker as the only child of Shirley MacLaine and producer Steve Parker. Biography.com says her given name was Stephanie and that she became known professionally as Sachi. Parker is both an actress and a memoirist; she is not simply known through her family connection.

What has Sachi Parker acted in?

Penguin Random House’s author biography describes Parker as an accomplished actress and lists selected credits across film, television and theater. The examples below are the publisher’s selections, not a complete filmography or evidence of recent activity.

Medium Selected work named by Penguin Random House
Film Stick, Back to the Future, About Last Night, Peggy Sue Got Married and Scrooged
Television Star Trek: The Next Generation and Equal Justice
Theater The publisher also notes theater work and a one-woman show based on her life, titled Lucky Me.

Why did Parker live in Japan?

Biographical accounts say Parker spent part of her childhood living with her father in Japan. Biography.com reports that MacLaine and Steve Parker married in 1954 and divorced in 1982. Vanity Fair reports that Sachi was born in 1956 and that Steve Parker moved to Japan by the late 1950s, with Sachi living with him during the school year.

The reason for that arrangement is not presented consistently in the family’s accounts. Vanity Fair describes differences between the women’s memoirs, and the available coverage does not independently establish a single explanation. It is more accurate to distinguish what each woman has said than to state a disputed motive as fact.

What did Sachi Parker say about her relationship with her mother?

In a 2013 Inside Edition interview, Parker said, “I missed her a lot.” Asked why she thought she had been sent to Japan, she replied, “She was young and Hollywood was beckoning. I think she thought that Japan would be a better place to have my raised,” and said, “I would see her once a year in the summer.” Asked whether she still loved her mother, Parker answered, “I adore her.” These are Parker’s recollections in that interview, not independent confirmation of the events she described.

How did Shirley MacLaine respond to Lucky Me?

Biography.com reported MacLaine’s response to her daughter’s memoir: “I’m shocked and heartbroken that my daughter would make statements about me that are virtually all fiction”. Vanity Fair likewise describes differences between the accounts in Parker’s Lucky Me and MacLaine’s memoir My Lucky Stars. The books offer personal perspectives on family history; the cited coverage does not resolve the disputed allegations or establish one account as definitive.

How to read the competing memoirs

Parker’s Lucky Me is her 2013 account of her life with and apart from her mother. MacLaine’s My Lucky Stars offers her own memoir perspective. Vanity Fair compares portions of the recollections and describes them as differing. Reading both can show where the narrators’ versions diverge, but neither memoir alone independently verifies the other’s claims.
