Ewears was 10 when the classroom performance was recorded in 2017. The song was written and first sung by Jamaican gospel artist Jermaine Edwards; Ewears’s performance introduced it to a much wider audience years later.
How Rushawn Ewears became known
The video began as a school performance during lunchtime at Top Hill Primary School. A teacher recorded Ewears singing “Beautiful Day,” and the clip was shared on Facebook in Jamaica. According to Voice of America’s January 2023 report, it circulated for several years before a later wave of online sharing and remixes carried it to international audiences.

The sequence matters: this was not a newly released song that went viral immediately. It was an older classroom recording that found a much larger audience after years of circulation.
Who wrote and first sang “Beautiful Day”?
Jermaine Edwards wrote and originally performed “Beautiful Day.” Voice of America dates the song’s debut in Jamaica to 2014. Ewears is the young singer heard in the viral school video, not the song’s original songwriter.

Edwards later described helping establish rights so Ewears and the teacher who recorded him could benefit. In a February 2023 interview with the Jamaica Observer, Edwards said they had helped Ewears set up his rights and royalties. The report does not disclose the contract terms or Ewears’s earnings.
What happened after the video went viral?
Remixes brought the performance to new listeners
By early 2023, the classroom clip had inspired remixes, including one by South African producer David Scott, known as The Kiffness. In a January 2023 TimesLIVE report, Scott said fans had repeatedly sent him Ewears’s performance before he made his remix.

A later release reached the UK chart
In February 2023, the Jamaica Observer reported that “Beautiful Day (Thank You For Sunshine),” credited to Ewears and Edwards and featuring UK rapper Prinz, debuted at No. 63 on the UK Official Singles Chart. That is the chart position reported at the time, not a current ranking.
The contemporary reports also recorded substantial online reach, but their figures are dated snapshots and refer to different descriptions of the video or remixes:

- TimesLIVE reported in January 2023 that the remix was No. 6 on Spotify’s Global Viral Chart during the preceding week, and that the video or remix had passed 100 million views across platforms at that time.
- Voice of America reported in January 2023 that The Kiffness’s remix had more than 6 million YouTube views at the time of its article.
Those figures should not be combined into one total or treated as current view counts.

The published accounts establish that the viral performance led to a later release credited to Ewears and Edwards, and that a Sony arrangement provided for royalties. They do not state the specific amount Ewears earned. Reports from 2023 also disagree on whether he was 16 or 17 at the time, though both say he was 10 when the school performance was recorded. Those historical ages do not establish his present-day age.

In a January 2023 interview quoted by Voice of America from the Jamaica Gleaner, Ewears reflected on music’s personal value: “I don’t know how many people have viewed the song, but for me, music is an inspiration. Sometimes when you feel down, music helps you to motivate yourself.”
Did Rushawn Ewears receive US$1 million from Akon?
No such payment is established by the reporting cited here. In January 2026, the Jamaica Observer reported that Edwards rejected online claims that Ewears received US$1 million from Akon for “Beautiful Day”; Ewears also called the claim false. The Observer quoted Ewears saying, “False statements like these is putting my life in danger. Please stop making false information.”
