What the surveillance video shows—and does not show
The FBI released surveillance video showing a masked person appearing to tamper with Nancy’s front-door camera. The reporting reviewed does not establish the person’s identity or prove that person’s role in her disappearance. The footage is an investigative lead, not confirmation of who took her. Messages described in media reports should not be treated as verified accounts of what happened to Nancy. An FBI official told Reuters that none of three messages then reported in the media was believed genuine, according to ABC News Australia’s July 1, 2026 report. The official’s assessment was anonymous, and the report did not explain the full basis for it.

What the earlier reported notes claimed
The Associated Press reported that a purported February 2 note said Nancy was safe and would be released unharmed after a $4 million cryptocurrency payment. A second reported note, dated February 6, said she had died shortly after being taken. These were claims made in purported messages, not established facts about Nancy’s condition or fate. Associated Press, September 29, 2026.
What authorities said about a newer message
In its September 29 report, the Associated Press said the Pima County Sheriff’s Department had determined that a newly surfaced purported ransom message was not credible. The department urged people to report such messages to law enforcement and warned that scammers may exploit concern about the case. That department assessment is separate from the FBI official’s earlier assessment of the three messages reported in media.
