Craig Robinson is Michelle Obama’s older brother. He grew up with her in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood, studied and played basketball at Princeton, worked in finance, returned to basketball as a coach, and later became an author and sports leader. His story extends well beyond his family connection to the former first lady.
Craig Robinson and his Chicago roots
The Barack Obama Presidential Library identifies Craig Robinson as Michelle Obama’s older brother and notes that she followed him to Princeton University. The siblings grew up in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood, a shared background they reflected on in a 2019 conversation hosted by the Obama Foundation.
That conversation connected their family story to the community that shaped them. Michelle Obama described the vision for the Obama Presidential Center as being about more than the center itself: “The vision for this isn’t just about the Obama Presidential Center. It’s about the Southside of Chicago. It’s about our neighborhood and community.” The Obama Foundation reported the remark from the summit conversation with Robinson, moderated by Isabel Wilkerson.
Princeton basketball and a career in finance
Robinson attended Princeton, where he played basketball under coach Pete Carril. CBS described him in a 2009 report as a two-time Ivy League Player of the Year. After college, he worked in finance before returning to basketball professionally.

From assistant coach to Oregon State head coach
Robinson returned to coaching as an assistant at Northwestern and later became head coach at Oregon State. CBS’s 2009 announcement identifies him as Oregon State’s head coach at that time. These are historical roles; that announcement does not establish his current employment.
His memoir, A Game of Character
Robinson’s book, A Game of Character: A Family Journey from Chicago’s Southside to the Ivy League and Beyond, recounts his path from Chicago and Princeton through finance and coaching. A 2010 interview with Princeton Basketball describes the memoir as a way to tell his life story beyond being known as Michelle Obama’s brother. It is Robinson’s memoir, not a biography of Michelle Obama.

Podcast and sports leadership reported in 2025
On March 10, 2025, the Associated Press reported that Robinson and Michelle Obama were launching IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson, a weekly podcast. The AP also identified Robinson at that time as executive director of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Those details describe what was reported on that date, not a verified current release schedule or employment status.
